Passenger footboard mount
« on: July 02, 2006, 11:03:20 AM »

I moved the passenger footboards to their lowest position and now can feel a vibration at certain RPM's and/or going over bumps. It appears the the motor vibration is causing the lower right of the primary to make contact with the footboard mount as it interferes with the motions of the motor/primary unit. My passengers can feel the "clunking" in their left foot. Moving the mount up to the middle (where it was as delivered) eliminates the problem, but my main passenger likes the low position. Anyone experience this? I am wondering if it is a motor mount problem that is not controlling the motions of the motor adequately, or something else. I will bring this up at the 1000 mile service, but wondered if anyone has had this problem. Another solution I've considered is grinding on the mount to allow more clearance, but I don't care for that idea.

OK, I guess no one has this problem?? Does anyone have their footboard mounted at the lowest position? And you are not expeiencing any contact between the mount and primary? I moved up to the middle position and all is well, except that the wife would like the boards lower... When I get this solved I can post the info here, but apparently no one has this issue.

Dont know if this would work but when i fitted my Vance & Hines true duals the kit came with some heavy washers to space off the front offside floorboard maybe you could make up a spacer to take the rear board away from the primary case?? got to be better than grinding !!  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] :)

Haven't moved mine, CVTony, but the spacer sure sounds like a better option than grinding...how bad is it hitting?

Tony,

I hadn't moved my passenger boards from the stock position, but your question prompted me to pop out to the garage to check it out.  I moved the left board to the bottom position, snugged it up, then rotated it as far as the alignment pin would allow in both directions.  With the mount rotated forward, I measured the clearance between the primary cover and the mounting bracket with feeler gauges at .090 inch. With it rotated rearward, I measured .140 inch clearance.  The alignment pin is a rather sloppy fit in the holes, especially in the bottom one.  Before resorting to surgery, try loosening the mount bolt and hold the front edge of the board down while retightening the bolt.  If my measurements are typical, you could pick up as much as .050 inch of additional clearance.

I thought the same thing about the slop in the pin fit and wedged the mount rearward with a screwdriver while I tightened the bolt. I also thought about taking some measurements, like you did and I will before I bring the bike to the dealer. I mentioned it today while at the dealer's second store and they had not heard of it, but their best wrenches are at the main dealership. Thanks.
