Starting after 2 or 3 days
« on: December 09, 2011, 08:23:52 PM »

After my bike sits in the garage for 2 or 3 days its slow to turn over the first stroke or two but starts, this is the first 110 engine I have owned.
Is this normal ?  please advise.   Thanks

Along with that are you keeping it hooked up to a battery tender when it's sitting? I'm on my original battery (7+ years old) and have kept it hooked to a battery tender whenever it is parked at home since day one which IMO has helped in my battery lasting as long as it has.

 Quoted the wrong post... My comment was in addition to your post for the OP. :-[ :D

Regarding the short rides don't know if that would have any significance or not but I do know keeping it hooked up to the Battery Tender has definitely made a difference in the longevity of my battery.

Its all good... Batteries dont last long here... My commute is a 1/2 hour IF I take the long way.. if not its 20 minutes. (about 18 miles)

Remember, I live on a rock in the middle of the pacific ocean... and its 112 miles around.

Normal life for a modern AGM Harley battery seems to be anywhere from 3 to 6 years.  There will always be some that fall outside, but the majority tend to fall within that range.

With a 2009 model, the battery would be in that window, so it may be on it's way to the battery graveyard.  But before writing it off, I would suggest putting it on a charger until it's fully charged, then doing a load test.  If you're not equipped to do a load test yourself, take the battery to a dealer or to one of the auto parts stores that offer free testing.

Make certain the connections are all clean and tight (battery cables, starter positive and ground connections, etc.)  It should be part of an annual maintenance check, but if you have a dealer do your maintenance I wouldn't assume they actually check this sort of thing.

I do and they do... of course, the bike did sit for 12 weeks after the lifters took a dump (All I did all the other little things)... but other than that the bike never sits for more than 2 days

My 08 CUSE still has the original battery, has 60,000 miles, and cranks and starts quickly.  I am also wondering how long the battery will go.  I don't use a battery tender....I check the voltage in the dead of winter when it sits for a week or so, but it hasn't dropped below 12.7 volts, so I don't bother to use the charger.  My Kaw drains down in a few days (even with a new battery) to 12.5 volts, so I put the tender on if I can't ride it.  I just put it on for a few hours when I do.

I'd guess your short battery life might have something to do with where you live and the high temperatures.  High temps kill batteries, even the so-called maintenance free ones.  Or it might just be related to the quality of recent stuff from Harley.  It sure seems like I'm hearing a lot more about batteries failing prematurely these days compared to just a few short years ago.  :nixweiss:

It's always better to keep your battery 100% charged, if possible.  A voltage test is not an indication of whether it is 100% charged.  Letting a partially discharged battery sit for any length of time will shorten the life of the battery, no if's, and's, or but's.  Keeping a battery tender ready to hook up to your bike whenever you park it at your house is just simply a good idea and practice.

Starting the ninth year on the battery in my 96 Wide Glide, and it always sits on the tender as I don't ride it that much anymore but it will start right up. I will get a new one this spring just because this one has been so good.

Along with that are you keeping it hooked up to a battery tender when it's sitting? I'm on my original battery (7+ years old) and have kept it hooked to a battery tender whenever it is parked at home since day one which IMO has helped in my battery lasting as long as it has.

I'm sure the heat (more 95+ temp days than not this summer) plays a big factor in the life of a battery which begs for an initiation of a new thread.
