I love to see all my favorites posting on a single thread.  I guess thats why we join up in a forum like this.   To learn and see how the others do things.  I never have lane shared, but I never rode in California either.  I can't see it and it seems really dangerous to me.  I know how I drive a car and I wouldn't want to share a lane with me.  But you have to be pretty brave to ride a motorcycle any way.  Just sayin'.  :nixweiss:

Going to make you guys laugh but I didn't know what the heck 'lane sharing' was..

still didn't until 3/4 through this thread...its lane splitting..there is no way that I would even consider going in between cars...its dangerous enough here staying in your own lane...I live in the DC metro area

I make it a point not to hurry when I'm on the bike...try my best to pay attention to the little things and look for an escape route always...good luck to you 'lane sharers' out there..

To the OP, Welcome to the site..Its a great place..

I keep hitting myself in the head w/ a hammer but I'm getting better at missing. Any tricks or should I just keep practicing?

Screamin..be sure to yell real loud so the hammer will be aware of your presence.  Also, you obviously have not much experience at this..keep practicing.

In California two vehicles can share the same lane. Probably wouldn't work for two cars/trucks but ok for a car/truck and motorcycle,bicycle,moped... and its a good law when not abused by passing at excessive speed.  Doc

If you've already passed the beginner HMITHWAHSF* course, I'd suggest signing up for the intermediate HMITHWAHSF* course immediately.

If your head gets sore, trying missing your toes for a bit. BUT, keep practising.

It's legal to split lanes here in KY, unless you get caught. That's my biggest problem with lane splitting here...I've gotten caught doing illegal things too many times.

Mr Walker..do you know how fast you were going?

No

There are three sections of the California Vehicle Code used to govern lane-sharing:

Section 22350:
No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.

Section 21658
Whenever any roadway has been divided into two or more clearly marked lanes for traffic in one direction, the following rules apply:

•(a) A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practical entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from the lane until such movement can be made with reasonable safety.
•(b) Official signs may be erected directing slow-moving traffic to use a designated lane or allocating specified lanes to traffic moving in the same direction, and drivers of vehicles shall obey the directions of the traffic device.

Section 22107
No person shall turn a vehicle from a direct course or move right or left upon a roadway until such movement can be made with reasonable safety and then only after the giving of an appropriate signal in the manner provided in this chapter in the event any other vehicle may be affected by the movement.

The CHP (CA Highway Patrol) acknolwdeges lane spitting is permissible but must by done in a "prudent manner".

From Laneshare.org:

When it comes to lane-sharing in North America, California is Mecca. In fact, if you want to get anywhere on a motorcycle in the Los Angeles basin, avoiding lane-sharing is not an option. The practice of lane-sharing has been allowed for decades. Yet, contrary to popular belief, there is no California statute permitting the practice. On the other hand, there’s no law stating you can’t lane-share. In other words, lane-sharing is not legal, but rather not illegal in the Golden State.

Perhaps a matter of semantics for some, this is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it allows some flexibility in the use of lane-sharing. On the other hand, it leaves it up to the discretion of the Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) and his/her opinion whether your brand of lane-sharing is “reasonable and prudent“.

The generally “understood” guidelines seem to be:

•Travel no faster than 10 mph faster than the vehicles you’re lane-sharing with.
•Merge back in with the traffic when they reach 30-35 mph.
•Never exceed the speed limit.
•Lane-sharing between lanes #1 and #2 is preferred. (#1 being the “fast” or “inside” lane)
•Stay, more or less, in one lane or the other. Excessive meandering might get you cited. (CA code 21658)
•Ride carefully to not cause damage to other vehicles.
Add to this a few other pointers:

•Be a competent rider before attempting the practice.
•Be prepared to adjust your speed as necessary.
•Cover your brake and clutch to reduce reaction time.
•Avoid lane-sharing between two large trucks.
•Be wary of open spaces inviting a vehicle to change lanes.
•Be vigilant of other vehicle operator’s head movements indicative of an impending lane change.
•Check your mirrors and be prepared to move over for overtaking motorcycles behind you.
•When in doubt, wait for a CHP motor patrol officer and follow him/her. (You might have to travel a bit faster than 10mph to keep up.)
When an incident occurs between the lane-sharing motorcyclist and another vehicle, it’s not always the motorcyclist who gets cited. It’s up to the LEO to decide who was at fault (back to the double-edged sword). For instance, if the lane-changing vehicle didn’t signal the change properly, that operator could be cited for violating CA code 22107. On the other hand, if the motorcyclist was deemed to be traveling at too great a speed for the situation, CA code 22350 would be used to cite the rider.

I love you man! Never have lane shared/split either. Never thought I would ride without a lid but every time I hit the Florida line off it comes. :nixweiss: Well I see HeadAndEyes is back online. Did you hook up with Mark and the Socal gang and go for a ride? How did it go? What you been doing today, we have all been busy making this thread larger. :drink:

Once or twice a year, I end up nailing a car while I am lane sharing. To be more specific I do not exactly run into the cars, but I rub up against them. I am tired of doing this, and am looking for some tips to avoid rubbing up against vehicles. I am not sure if it's case of not knowing how wide my HD is, or what's the deal. Maybe I need better judgment where I'll fit and where I won't. Any tips would be valued. I am tired of scuffing up my baby.

Might I suggest not sharing lanes with other vehicles as the best preventative measure.

Most of you may not believe me on this one but the local guys who know who i,m talk-in about can back this up.. I've got a friend who splits side by side Simi Truck (singles and doubles) , On streight aways or sweepers . To hear him tell folks how to do it, his number one advice is to not try going in when there is a lots of space at the rear end of the Simi,s cause the front will be tight. He also recommends you should be at 85 to 95 mph going past the cab,s to give the truck drivers a thrill. My Buddy could give a counter point to Marks class. My friend class would be called "Ride like a Dick"

Thank you everyone for the advice and input. Some of you have quite honestly been asses with your messages to me, both public and private. But those that have been warm and friendly more than make up for the few bad apples.

Shame on the rude ones for talking down to someone who comes on here looking for help and showing their weakness.
