If you've already passed the beginner HMITHWAHSF* course, I'd suggest signing up for the intermediate HMITHWAHSF* course immediately.

Does the HOG (Hammer Owner's Group) reimburse for successful completion?  Looking on line for a certified instructor. Hate to have to travel to Paducah for it.

I would ride with in your means. Don't share a lane with any 4 wheel vehicle. 2 and 4 wheels don't mix. Ride more and practice. Join a HOG chapter and ride with others. Keep all the 2 wheels together. Take a Riders Edge Advanced Class. They are great refreshers. Remember if you are a HOG member you will get a $50 refund. Enjoy riding and be safe.

Hook up with Mark (Ironhorse on this forum).  He's a great trainer......the wife and I have gone down to Los Angeles three times to take his class.

I'd also suggest that you get out there and ride more.  A weekend morning, get out of town......ride 200 miles, have lunch and then find a different route home.  Preferably on two lane roads and not the interstates. :2vrolijk_21:

Thank you everyone for the advice and input. Some of you have quite honestly been asses with your messages to me, both public and private. But those that have been warm and friendly more than make up for the few bad apples.

Shame on the rude ones for talking down to someone who comes on here looking for help and showing their weakness.

I'm sure once you have participated in a variety of threads and contributed to the forum by sharing your motorcycling experiences, those who were "bad apples", were "rude" and were "asses" will feel bad, and will likely loose sleep over the entire matter.

The only reason I advised against splitting lanes is many years back, I helped scrape a poor soul off the 405 in orange county that got caught between two semi's. Won't ever forget what a mess it made. I'd rather someone hurt my feelings than get creamed like that guy.

Well, HeadAndEyes…. I know You must think my post’s of “WOW” and “yes” were rude but a first post coming out and asking what I thought to be a question with an obvious answer seemed to be from someone just looking to get a flame started. All I could think about was INSANITY!

The definition of Insanity: to do the same thing over and over again expecting different results.

I thank you for getting such an informative thread started as I learned much from what I have read. I don’t have much experience with lane splitting due to the laws in my state but that is not the reason for my short responses. I can only agree with you that you already knew the answer that you didn’t have enough experience in riding motorcycles and I was just reading someone that appeared to have a death wish and I see that here in Chicago all the time from the crotch rockets riding by on one wheel. I wish you all the best in your quest of riding safe and enjoying the freedom of riding on two wheels. Please take the offer from Ironhorse, and spend as much time as you can learning how to ride safely. I am still learning after over thirty years and to see someone with such little time in the saddle pushing themselves in such a dangerous situation seems to me…insane, sorry if you took my short answers to be rude but I think you got the information you need here, hope to read more of your responses here and wish to see you some day at one of our gtg’s…….

Safe riding consists of several things, among them are skill and judgement. Both typically improve w/ experience. On the flip side, some should never ride. 4,000 miles isn't a lot but it's a heck of a lot more than many had here before they became safe riders. Take another class if you think your skills are lacking. Not long ago I took another class just because I strive to learn all I can and become a better rider. The judgement thing is on you. If, after 4,000 or miles,or even many more, you're still are bouncing off cars then maybe riding just isn't for you.

I think some narrow drag bars on a chopper is the answer to lane splitting.  :coolblue: spyder

All I have to say is, I'm just glad the OP realized he had an issue and had the courage to share it publicly. While I do agree that lane-splitting is pretty dangerous stuff reserved only for the most experienced riders, the reality is, there are alot of truly horrible motorcycle riders that don't get it, and are a persistant danger to themselves and others.

That said, HeadAndEyes I hope you caught Ironhorse's invite. You would be doing yourself an enormous disservice if you do not try to connect with him. Most folks could only wish for such an opportunity that you lucked into.  Please reach out to him.

Good luck

JC is on the money here  :2vrolijk_21: He turned me to Mark's class a few years back and even after 38 yrs of riding I learned more than I thought possible. I've also taken one of Mark's few advanced motor officer prep course's. What a hoot that was! Mark is not only a valued member her but also a great friend to many of us.
Lane splitting is legal and a way of life out here in Ca., and with propper training, execution and experience it will be safer and less traumatic experience.
