Bassani's on a Convertible
« on: December 12, 2011, 06:18:19 PM »

What is the general opinion of some installing a Bassani full exhaust on the Conv? The only negatives I have heard are the bluing issue which can be avoided by doing a tune. Thoughts on Bassani?

Hey, PM, just saw your message and may (or may not) have some useful info.  I've just installed a 2-1 Bassani B4 on my '12 Street Glide CVO, so I can give my general impressions.

I heard Bassanis had a bluing problem.  Talked to the Bassani rep (Kurt?), who said there was a batch of pipes years ago that were poorly chromed, and had lots of issues.  Bassani now uses a different outfit to chrome their pipes, and haven't had any problems recently (of course he'd say that), but once bad news gets out, it's had to shake that reputation. I love the look and sound of my B4, very different than anything out there.  That's why I choose them - they're relatively unique, which is important to me.

Installation was pretty easy, they fit well, but the section of the heat shield where the pipes join doesn't fit well.  There's a quarter inch gap where the heat shields aren't flush. There was also some glue or tape (it's definitely NOT boot burn, and I cleaned them very carefully before riding) on one of the heat shields I didn't see before I rode it for the first time.  It blackened the shield, and I've not been able to get it off.  The chrome now is pretty scratched up at that spot, so I'll need to find some good chrome restorer after I figure out how to clean it up.

Again, I love the look and sound of the pipes, and it feels like the bike pulls much harder now.  But due to the poor fitment of the heat shields and the mysterious burned substance on the shields, I can't recommend the Bassanis whole heartedly.  I realize your question is about the Convertible, but I am not convinced Bassani has its quality control issues solved.

Good luck with your decision!  Hope this helps a little.

Hey Lilcoot...try using oven cleaner.  The kind you don't have the heat your oven to use.  I've not tried it yet, but I have some tar that got on my right boot when I was doing some parking lot exercises.  An old biker buddy gave me this tip.  I'm going to give it a try this next week, while on vacation.  Try not to get it on any painted surfaces!

I'm going to have to look up Bassani...ya got my curiosity up.

Do NOT get it on any painted or powdercoated surfaces. You also might want to try some chrome cleaner/polish before going the oven cleaner route. :nervous:

Lilcoot,
Thanks for your reply. Bassani's are not cheap, but they are unique, that's what I like about them. I wanted something a little different, and the Bassani's seem to fit the bill. They make a stepped header pipe which should make more power with a tune and they look good as well. I want to go with 2 pipes vs the 2 into 1 for appearance reasons. Bassani's should be of a better quality than the competition, so your story scares me a little bit. I am going to have my HD dealer do the install and will check the pipes first. My dealer wants approx $1,650 for the exhaust installation along with the race tuner and associated tune, so they better sound and look the part. If there is anything less than perfect, they will go back. Thanks again for your insight and good luck getting that spot off.

pm, good luck with your new set up.  I'm always amazed at how pipes and a good tune can completely change the character of a bike.  Please let us know how it turns out.

Well, that is great news because that is what I wanted to do originally. Will a re-tune still be neccessary after the Fullsac upgrade? Also, can you get a marked improvement in performance over the factory exhaust system similar to a complete new exhaust such as Bassani and re-tune?

I've had the Bassani "Pro Streets" on one of my Springers for 18 months now. Very happy, no blueing, great chrome, great sound. Being a little shorter than most they show off the rear wheel nicely. Happy to post pics if you would like. :2vrolijk_21:

Ok, here you go.  it was a bit sunny a home this arvo, so you wlll have to excuse the glare.

Like I said, i really like these pipes, don't know where all the crud about bueing comes from, because I have not seen any at all. If you after a quiet pipe though, these are not for you.
