anybody expecting a '12 convertible in the future and when??
« on: December 15, 2011, 07:31:49 PM »

I was told today that the '12 my dealer was expecting to be shipped Dec 9 will now be delayed until April.  Has anybody out there connected with a '12 bike yet or have one that is still on target for the near future?  How are bikes being shipped overseas for January delivery if we can't get them here in the states until April???

Pork-
There was a 2012 satin pewter one on the show room at the Harley dealer here in Billings. That was in early Oct. They had 4 people trying to buy it immediately. It sold to a person up in Sidney MT. I liked the color of the bike. I didn't like the skulls or the bags for some reason.

Yeah, I saw all the colors at Sturgis last year and visited briefly with Cliffy from England.  Did not like the Army drab green at all, and am not really partial to skulls although the blue hue was very nice looking.  Guess I settled on the red and there have only been a couple in the northwest so far as far as I know.  1st was end of August in Portland and I could get into it for $10,000 plus my bike total.  But elected not to do that as I thought there would be skads more within a few weeks.  Then I had an offer from Arizona which was my bike plus $16K and get this:  I could arrange for shipping in whatever method I chose.  Told that guy in a prominent Az dealership he could diplomatically go pound sand.  A lady in sales in Seattle area last week told me she would do my bike and $12,000.  After telling her in a nice way she was gouging quite a bit, she said she would work up some numbers for me and that was going on 2 weeks ago now.  Not a peep.  And a local dealership told me the same thing.  No word from him either.  So, my dealership of choice has now agreed to my previous offer (cashed my down check over a month ago) but had their order delayed until April for a red one.  but guess that means I pay the same, but can ride my bike as long as I want until the new one gets in for the same value.  Guess this is all to say that HD is changing how many they are allocating across the nation and spreading them throughout the chronilogical year.  Not sure what the next years are going to look like.   Pork.

Well, bear with me, indulge me for a moment, and humor me.  I'll try to explain.  Now of course there are many people out there and everybody has a different way of looking at something........for that moment in time!
You are probably right and a person can probably get all the components themselves for $2000.  Maybe and probably even less.  But let's agree on $2K.  Now you have to either pay someone to install them or do them yourself.  Most of us (maybe??) elect to do the work ourselves.  That's the beauty of doing mods on our bikes versus the rice-burners out there.  we do them ourselves.  So, on this bike the lower shields have to be installed by us and that means being drilled.  So, that means using hand tools and drilling the holes that hooooooopefully line up correctly.  How many people do you imagine attempt this and drill the holes out of place, too large hole, strip out the hole, or etc?  Pretty important to get it right, the first time.  Then the job of reinstalling the new shield and that hopefully goes well.  Now the job of doing the splicing of the new wiring for the gps into the harness of our '11 bikes.  How many people really have much experience doing that? Cut the wrong wire the first time?  Cut the wire too short??  Get it all right the first time and then it comes apart later? Now let's say you got all that stuff right and are successful.  When you do trade your bike in later, you have a modified bike, rather than something original, the way it came from the factory.  And I know very few bikes probably get very many years old and are still factory originals; again, the beauty of owning a Harley versus some others out there.  And you may have put 10K-20K miles on your bike.  Some people are ready to trade off and start off with a new bike not plagued by a few, very agrivating problems.  Then there is the fact that when you trade up a year, you get a brand new bike.  No miles, no scratches (you get "overs" in case you dropped the other one) and you get another chance at a new, maybe more desireable color.  So, it can be more than just paying $2k more and thinking you have the same bike as one that comes from the factory that way.  The person that makes out is the person that waits to buy a 2012 model because for $100 more, you get all that was available for 2011 plus new windshield and gps.  The person that bought the '11 got to ride a model way different than the '10 (cruise control, remember; abs brakes, different wiring system, and music system).  But it was $1600 over the '10 price.  I was all over that.  So, the difference between model years (physical adornments) is sometimes more than just a money figure covers.  Many people, many personal choices.  Just my way of looking at things.  Now if I couldn't afford it, I may be looking at it from yet another angle.    Pork.

If you have an 11 and want a 12 and don't mind taking a bit of a hit, then go for it. We only live once. I looked at the 12s
and decided I liked the 11 better. I liked the blue paint on the 11, not into skulls on the 12. I also like the look of the smaller smoked windshield on the 11 over the 12. I find the wind blast kinda changes with the wind , no pun intended. Sometimes I sit at 90 and all is calm and other times 70 can be blustery. I think the wind delectors on the 12 look like an afterthought and I don't care much for the medallion on the windshield. I'm also not a GPS guy. I really have my doubts about the 12 windshield being the untimate. I rode a 12 at Sturgis and didn't see much difference. I think you need to fit a Fatboy shield for some real potection.
But if a 12 is what you want then go and get it.

ok p.orkster , i understand what you are saying, BUT you will still have the flexibility of converting it back to original as you have kept the old set up which will snap on and off, a harley dealer i am sure can do the mods for you, even if it cost a grand, you are still in front, a good auto electrician can do the wiring .
and youre gonna kick yourself when 3 months later a cvo heritage turns up at sturgis....... maybe.
the biggest hit on any vehicle is in the first year, in 5 years you will get the same trade.
but . have a happy xmas, and remember only my humble opinion,

Cig, I believe I agree with you on all fronts.  Especially the part about the new Heritage model coming out within just a few months........grrrrrr that would make me really steam........So, I have it on order and have 4 months to give it a real good thinking............ Hope I don't decide to do the windshield and then trade as well.....ha!  We'll see.   But I really do like the idea of a Heritage CVO.  Think how well they could make those leather bags look.  Remember the Springer of about 10 years ago???

You know what is so funny? We can talk ourselves into doing whatever we want to. it makes me laugh. Porky, you could talk yourself into keeping your bike and justify it to yourself and friends. You could and can also build a case for a new bike purchase as you have. I buy alot of things that are not needed. I justify it in my head and go throught with it. After all, if its my $$ and it makes me feel better, why not? I think that we justify it to ourselves to not feel guilty or to make us feel that the money was well spent. Who knows.............................in the end, they are just toys and there is nobody to stop us us from just being big kids. Its a good thing!

I was thinking that just yesterday, myself.  I have done that so many times in my life.  After all, that is the process we all go thru to make a purchase of any kind.  and we end up working off the end of the justification that comes out on top.  Sometimes we just leave off an item or two of importance and end up making the buy.  When, if we had calculated that item into the equation, we may have decided not to make the buy after all and been completely justified in our own mind..............until some "spoiler"  came along and asked, "did you think about this??" at which time we answer, "Dooohhh!"  I know it is just a decision I will have to make.  Actually, everybody out there in Harleyville is asking themselves the same question every day of every year.  Some buy a new bike (new to them, mind you) every year.  Some buy one used bike once in their lifetime and never think twice about another.  To each his or her own and who should really care?  As long as our families aren't going hungry or we aren't mortgaging the family farm to make the buy, and meeting our other financial obligations, why not?  How many of us have heard the phrase, "oh, I'd like to buy a harley but I can't afford it............of course, I can afford these 2 cartons of cigarettes every month (right there is enough to make the jump to Harley over whatever else you bought) or my Whiskey or truckload of beer, and you know the rest.  When a person decides to buy a Harley out of personal choice, then they have finally joined the ranks of people that can and do make their own decisions in their own lives; not being dictated to by another individual.  That is part of the phrase "living free".  I like that.   But look, this seems to be turned into a "reality show" about the porkster's decision to buy or not to buy.  Remember, I just asked the question about who had purchased or ordered a '12 and whether the available inventory is truly being suppressed by Harley as a marketing ploy to raise up the value of harleys  versus how they have flooded the market in the past.  that's all I was asking...............

Back to the subject at hand, now that I think about it, my local HD dealership has been out of CVO's completely. They usually have 1-3 in inventory. For 2012's, looks like the well has dryed up for now.
