Ortega Hwy 12/17 RIDE REPORT
« on: December 17, 2011, 08:13:16 PM »

Mark Twain once wrote "Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated".

The same could have been said for today. Reports of ride cancellation due to rain were not only exaggerated, they were dead wrong.

We met at the rallying point selected by HeadAndEyes. It was nice to see everyone again. I had a new seat, Josh had another BMW RT, and Mike and John had smiles ear to ear. We waited a more than reasonable amount of time for others to show up and then rode out. Our first stop was Cooks Corner. Thanks to Josh who was able to outwit my GPS, we got there without using the toll road. There weren't a whole lot of bikes there, but the camaraderie more than made up for it.

From there we rode back to Ortega Hwy where Josh peeled off for a prior engagment. We rode Ortega past Hells Kitchen and into the mountains and overpass for some nice scenic views. We made one unplanned stop where Mike bought a child seat,...........I'll let HIM explain THAT ONE. And then it was off to Grandpadocs house. It was decorated so nicely and we enjoyed some Holiday Cheer. They gave us a tour of their house and invited us ALL back for a cookout when the weather turns hot.

While I've always admired Lou's 2000 SE RoadGlide, Lou became enamored of John's GoldWing, at one point dropping to his knees and heaping praised upon the ubercomfortable watercooled beast. (Damn, I missed taking pictures of that).

At Lou and Terrys suggestion we had lunch at one of their favorite Mexican Restaurants on the north shore of Lake Elsinore. The excellent food was only outdone by the company. As our impromptu hosts, Lou and Terry picked up the tab. We can hardly wait to return the favor when they join us for a ride.

All in all a wonderful day, a superlative way to enter into the maddening final stretch before the holidays. HDBean and NSTY110RIDER, we will see you both next time.

HeadAndEyes, PedroHarley and 2010FLHX, we are sorry you couldn’t make it. As you can see it was nothing but good times and good people.

Looks like you guys made the best of it.  Was it raining or something?  I mean why were people cancelling?

Thanks for posting Mark. :2vrolijk_21:   By the way, where is that Cooks Corner?   It's in one of the Harley Davidson books that I'm in but I never knew where that place is at. :nixweiss:

JC,

Cooks Corner is buried deep in the heart of Orange County. Here is a link to it:

http://www.cookscorners.com/

It is to Orange County what the Rock Store is to Los Angeles, and Hells Kitchen is their version of Neptunes Net, although Neptunes has nicer views of the coast. It really is a good launching station to get to Docs place in Elsinore.

As for folks cancelling, NSTY110RIDER and HDBean both said they were not sure if they could make it, so I really didn't count on them showing. The new guy, HeadAndEyes was the ride organizer, so we kind of expected him to show. But he is new so the weather probably kept him home. In the other thread he posted about heavy rain, thunderstorms and high winds which we saw none of all day so it must have been local only to his neighborhood in Del Mar. I sure hope this one experience with the less than sunny weather doesn't keep him away. I'm just sorry he missed todays ride. We had such fun and this would have been a great opportunity for some of us to meet him.

I got that article in the mail today, thanks. I'll probably read it later tonight.

I had canceled my other plans. I had my bike out of the garage and was ready to leave when I decided to check the thread again and saw that the ride had been canceled.  I decided to hang out and have more coffee then decided that I still wanted to ride so I went over the Ortega and back. I may have passed you guys at some point.
I'm glad you guys had a great day. I wish I had just left that morning, oblivious to the cancellation, so I could have finally met and rode with you guys.

Correction!!    Mark is not gone and rumors of his dissapearance are greatly exaggerated!  Here is his Facebook post from April 10, 2012:

For those of you seeking an update on my overseas assignment, I’m not going. This has been a long and frustrating road for me. The selection process, the contract protests, the endless delays all culminated with my contract being rescinded. It appears I have been subjected to a bidding and selection process conducted below acceptable standards of conduct. This whole event has been a big test of my faith and trust. So I am back home and unpacking every box that I so carefully sealed and packed up not too long ago.

I just left him a message to get the latest.
