A thought to share on the diamond cutting to whomever it was considering the work.  You really need some contrasting color behind the machine work for it to pop.  Against silver cylinders it looks good.  But you have to look for it a bit to "find it."  Against granite or black or some other (RED!) darker contrasting color it can really look good.   But it does need that contrasting darker background.

Contacted diamond head and here is what I know at this point. It is $449 for standard cut and $549 for show cut. It is $150 round trip shipping and a five day timeframe once they get it. Now for the unknown. How much and who can remove the engine and put it back in once it is done? Also, who can do the orange inferno powder coating and how much? Diamond head recommended our hd dealership, Manowar hd, in Lexington do the engine removal and replacement. I wonder what they charge?

Also, the pictures do not show a great detail between the standard and show cut. What are your alls thoughtson the two different cuts?

Difference between standard and show cut isn't how it's cut.  It's where.  Show cut they do everything that's exposed.  Standard cut they leave some areas out that (they think) aren't readily as seen.

If you're doing powdercoating that will have to be done before the diamond cutting.  The parts will also have to be completely disassembled before going off to powder coating.  So whomever disassembles the engine for you will also need to pull the heads apart and be competent to do everything that is part of a good head job on reassembly.

The cylinders will go through a high heat cycle to cure the powder coat.  You can't just put it back together on the old rings.  Someone will have to hone the cylinders and install new rings also.  This isn't just a cosmetic task you're getting in to.

Twolanerider, thank you for the important info. I now understand the work to be done. Just need to decide if I want to go through it. It sounds very expensive for total package.

Definitely a task to be forewarned about.  Don't want to get a top end pulled and only then understand there is a lot more to get done than had been planned for.

There really is a difference in having the powder coating as well, and if you've got the thing apart anyway...  :nixweiss:

Okay, update on info learned as of today.

HD Dealership will remove and put motor back in for labor cost of $600. The cost for replacing fluids, gaskets, etc. additional $150 at reassembly. HD can remove in less than 5 business days and get to powder coating.

Powder coating will be $160. They can do it in two days than ship to Diamond Head. Shipping/Ins. there and back to HD Dealership $150.

Show Cut at Diamond Head $550. They can do it in five business days and ship back to HD Dealer who will put back in less than 5 business days.

Total cost $600 + $150 + $160 + $150 + $550 = $1610 + taxes and unknown would be around $1800.

Now need to decide if this is a winter project i can afford. Anyone else have thoughts?

That's a lot of coin for a cosmetic improvement (not that I haven't done a few like it myself). I usually find myself satisfied and feeling it was worth it when finished.

If you have the funds and like the effect, go for it!

Just remember, you'll never get that money out of it when you sell.

If you like it and have the funds than get it. 6 mos down the road you will forget about the cost but still enjoy the look. If it was me i would. I should thought about that when I had pistons and cams put in the bike before i picked it up. Mine was already apart.
