Luggage rack
« on: December 19, 2011, 09:50:24 PM »

Whats a good luggage rack to use that looks good too.  Also how do you attach it do you have to have different mounting brackets than the stock one for the passenger back rest?

I just ordered the stealth detachable rack 53472-09 and the docking kit for it.  I will be riding with the solo seat 90% of the time and that is why I got the detachable one.  I have not taking delivery of my bike yet.  It came in last week and it's getting cams and a new exhaust on it.  I will post pics once I take delivery.

Most bikes with a detachable backrest but no luggage rack have what HD calls a two point docking system. If you want to have the backrest and a luggage rack then you need the HD four point docking system to make the luggage rack and backrest detachable.
Here is a shot of the Stealth rack on my 2009 SERG.

The wife and I both have the four point docking hardware and ride solo.  If you want a luggage rack that's really functional (keeps just about any kind of load up off your paint), take a look at Reply # 6, 7 and 8 here......   http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=32927.msg531083#msg531083

If you're wondering just what this luggage rack will haul, take a look at the first and second pics of this thread (on our way to get the 4 pt. docking hardware and the same luggage rack put on my bike, as we depart on a 10 state tour)....  http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=40248.0

These luggage racks are solo position luggage racks.

Here is the part info for the 4 point docking brackets :

http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448772511&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374309436764&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374309436764&locale=en_US&bmUID=1324391332137&bmLocale=en_US

I agree with JCZ, there are other racks that are made for hauling lots of stuff. The stealth rack to me is a good compromise if you only use the rack on an occasional basis or light loads.

Here's the luggage racks for touring models....   http://www.harley-davidson.com/search/search_results_main.jsp

Personally, based on previous experience, I wanted something that was going to keep things up off the paint and actually haul more than just a jacket.....I was looking for fuction.  As it were, found the rack that's very functional and also good looking. :2vrolijk_21:

thanks think thats the way i want to go. I want to be able to put bag on it without worries.  Wouldn't be on there unless i needed it.  Other wise I would have just kept the ultra.

That was my thinking.  And when I get where I'm going, it comes off and goes in the hotel room till I'm ready to leave.

I bought the Air Wing Rack only because it seems a little bigger and I haul a large T Bag. To stay on the safe side and be sure not to scuff the paint on the saddle bags I cut a piece of 1/2 plywwod to fit under the bag and drilled a couple of holes inthe plywood and attached it to the rack with zip ties.

When I'm on the road I take it off at the end of the day and reattach it the next  morning with a couple of zip ties.

That's the same thing I have coming for mine.  It's the same rack I had on the 08 SG but not detachable.
