    • CVO1: 2009 SERG Yellow
Restricted Paint?
« on: December 22, 2011, 06:24:32 PM »

I recently got a chopped tour pack fairly cheaply and wanted to get it painted to match my '09 SERG (in yellow, with some fancy-schmancy striping to match the gas tank).  I talked to a couple of Harley dealerships today to get their recommendations for a local painter and was informed that the yellow pearl is "restricted" and painters can't get it from any source.  Both of them stated that painters can "get close" but can't get an exact match without the codes from H-D.  They said that they'd be glad to sell me a painted CTP right from the MoCo for only a gazillion dollars, and further, if I needed some repair on a front fender (for example), I'd have to buy a new one!  Is this BS or part of the Joys Of Owning A CVO

Welcome to the world of CVO! :2vrolijk_21:

However, a good painter in your area should be able to dial that color for you.  Or, somebody on this form may already have the paint code from something they had painted.

This is what really burns me up.   :sauer005: :soapbox:

The matching Yellow Pearl tour-pak from HD (79224-09BKR) for the FLTRSE3 is $1400.  The same tour-pak for non-CVO's are $775.  The $1400 price is also increase of $150 from last year while the standard tour-pak price is the same.

Actually, that does not burn me.  It's proprietary, intellectual property to HD.  They developed it, they own it.  I'd probably do the same thing.  Either buy it or not but if I got the R&D in it, I'm going to protect it.

What does burn me, and it seems like I'm a long way from being alone, are the dealer's employees.  Bunch of know it all, autocratic azzholez, seems to be the rule.  Some really good ones, seem to be the exception nowadays.

Good Luck with the tour pack.

Maybe it is just me, but I cannot see why they charge $975 for a yellow pearl tour-pak (53287-07BPZ) for a 2008 and $1400 for a 2009.  As far as R&D, I really think that their R&D is minimal considering they have had the color for years.  I suspect it just another way of HD's giving the CVO owners some love.

My 05 tourpak lid had to be replaced due to a defect in paint (under warranty). What was surprising is that the tourpak lid was the same price as a painted to match king tourpak, with a lid!

Just a thought I am not sure but I got a saddlebag for an 09 Road Glide and it came in the same box that it was shipped to the painter in. I am not sure if it was a mistake but it looked like Harley shipped it to a custom painter in Wisconsin then they shipped it to me.

Any good high end body shop can match the paint with a laser shoot.  Give them your side cover and they have a machine that laser photos the paint and they can come up with a match that automatically mixes the paint.  I had it done on a black pearl metallic which has a chit load of various metallic flake and it matched great.  Doubt if they could blend into a fender and make it match well enough, but considering fender, tanks non connected parts it will pass the sharpest eye.

I bought a chopped tour pack from MOCO for my '09 SERG in silver.  I think with luggage rack I was into it about $1600.  I decided that I wanted one for a solo setup and didn't want to pay that much again.  I found a tour pack on Ebay with luggage rack for $600 in cobalt blue.  I sold the bracket (wouldn't work on '09) and had the tourpack painted at the local Chevy dealer for $125.  It's not Harley paint but unless you pull out a hand lens to compare, its good enough and a lot cheaper.

agreed..I sent my side cover to these guys and they matched and painted an inner fairing for me a few years ago...came out perfect.

Had the same issue with my Orange paint.  I am fortunate in having a good painter (not cheap), but the colour match even fools the dealers.  Running a f/s tourpak and lowers, all matching.  Worth doing.
