5000 mile check up
« on: December 28, 2011, 07:38:35 AM »

Santa was so nice and brought me all the manuals. My guess is that the first time the check up should take no more then three hours. I'm going to assume a Harley dealer mechanic can do three in one eight hour shift. Not a bad profit for the dealer at $650 plus per bike.......

My dearler only $140.00 and they do a good job. They change all fluids motor , trans, primary oil at ever oil change,
new spark plugs also, clean battery post, etc. They really do a fine job, there labor is $55.00 a hour .
About $80.00 in parts, 5 qts syn oil, sparks plugs , oil filter, gasket kit etc.

If that's all they are doing they are not doing a full check per the manual.

Boy I can't believe a true Harley dealer only charges $55/hr!
But I also agree, "IF" he is changing all the fluids, he's not doing much else!
A fluid change the first fall, when I didn't have any time cost me almost a
hundred, and that was about 5 years ago.

I spend just under $100 for fluid and filter. I use Red Line oil.

My dealer is $74 per hour and a 5k service runs in the $400 range. That is all fluids with syn 3 and all adjustments needed for that service. Usually a 2-3 hr deal to get it done. That's what HD stands for. Hundred's of dollars.

During my 5 hour negotiation before buying my CVO last October I made them give me the 1st check for free. That was a real problem for the dealer but they eventually gave in. After that I do it all myself.

Buy the service manual! It is the best.

muddypaws, when installing your drain plugs put a little oil on the O rings so they don't tear when you torque the bolt down. I put a mark on the bolt and the engine case with a permanent market pen before I undo it so I won't over tighten even though I use a torque wrench. If it clicks great, if not I go to the mark and just a taste more, so far so good. After reading all the items that are simply marked inspect I also bought the service manual. I just take my time and make sure all the fluids are drained. When changing  my primary fluid, I put my bike on side stand (my driveway has a decent slope) and about 45 ounces comes out. The other fluids I do on a bike stand. If you do it like they do at the HD dealer the bike is standing straight up so a lot of old fluid is left in primary. Just for the record my local HD dealer is up to $98.00 per hour for labor. One of the things that bugs me about dealerships is that if they open a bottle of brake fluid and use 2 or 3 ounces they charge you for the whole bottle. Just felt like complaining a bit.CAHDBIKER

The check did not take me all that long and I feel as though I do a much better job. I know I clean everything off way better, plus it's fun learning all about the bike.
