« on: December 28, 2011, 08:42:29 PM »

Personally, I think it sucks.  First, I don't really want a dealer working on my bike.  Second, I don't think they do what they're supposed to do (see statement one); Third, I can do a much better job myself and save a chit load of money in the process.  But, if you're not mechanically inclined, that's a different story.

if you plan i keeping it but if you sell early to some one not close to dealer it stays at dealer you buy from so if your traveling and stop at a dealer you will have to pay for service
now that said a service manual is $60.00 a lift for $700.00-1000.00 price of oil $80.00 2 hrs of you time for each service
 just saying

A friend of mine gets one with every new bike.  I think $1,900 sounds a bit higher than i remember him saying it cost him?  He does a lot of touring with his wife and racks up a reasonable amount of miles considering our riding time here in Michigan.  I think thats something to consider, but in my opinion, the most important factor is your local dealer.  Do they have a good shop and do you trust them?  I opted out of getting an extended service contract and maintenance because my local dealers service department sucks...plus you need to consider with stores closing, they are busier which effects the quality of work, and the down time based on how busy they are?  I can't wait til mine is out of warranty, we have a good local shop that quite honestly I trust them more than the local stealership.  My guess with HD cutbacks, we will see more independents pop up??

Are there any savings by pre paying? It seems to me that the dealer may want to give you a little bit of a deal, if they can keep bringing you into their shop to possibly spend more money on other HD products where they make full margin. The dealer is also using your money for as long as it takes you to ride 20K miles on your bike. They may look at it as a way to keep their mechanics busy servicing motorcycles.

Oil has increased in price over the last few years and if it continues to increase in price, a prepaid service plan may be a good way to hedge against increasing oil prices.

Not a bad deal, if it was $1600 cheaper.

So that's $1,900.00 for five regular maintenance services...that works out to $380.00 per service. Not counting any sales tax. Does not sound like a deal to me. I would not buy it. IMO the ESP would be a better option and cheaper also from Tri-County HD. There seems to be an abundance of incompetent techs at HD shops these days. Yes, there are some good ones even great ones but knowing who they are and having them close to your home is another story. JMO.

What do people pay for the recommended service intervals. I pay about $100 for oil change with syn 3. What does a 1,5,10--- service cost. My dealer is at around $400. Been that cost for years. 3 hrs plus parts

Not being mechanically inclined I have used a pre-paid service plan with two different dealerships.  One at the selling dealership for three years and now have one at a dealership which is closer to where I live.  They both change engine oil every 2500 miles either dino or syn and change all holes the next 2500 miles or at 5000 miles.  They both have unlimited miles and run the time line of the service contract.  Both dealerships have great service shops and I trust both the same.  When the first PPSP was up the closer dealership was having a special on their service plan, $1900 for 4 years.  The bike gets washed after every service and since I have 47,000 on my 2008 Ultra Classic I will be needing the front forks service done which costs over $500.00 and it is included.  Also both changed the air filter and spark plugs at no extra cost.  If you are on a trip and need a service, both plans at both dealerships said to bring the receipt and I will get paid back.  So me it is a good deal, I just don't have the mechanical knowledge, room, equipment (bike lift) to do the job myself.

like others, i choose to do the work myself or take it to a third party that I have been using for years.  It works out much cheaper that way and as long as you have the documentation that the service work was done, it does not violate the warranty.

Do to my working off shore and gone half the time, I always get pre-paid for my wifes bikes.  I think it is a very good deal.

I'm off shore right now so I do not have the paper work with me, but I believe it is 1199.00 for three years, unlimited miles, all owners manual intervals and service items covered, no tires.  Wash and detail after service also.

It was a great deal on her 09 Heritage, one month left on her service contract, and she has had all services through 85K miles

So, I got it on her new Street glide.

At my dealer it's called "Priority Maintenance Plan " . Includes : Transferable to another vehicle purchased, Pick up or delivery, Motorcycle loaners  , Priority scheduling with 24-hour turnaround , Syn3 upgrade, Wash and wax with each service. ALL factory scheduled maintenance for 10 years , Unlimited miles ...$2,300. My dealer is a  established outfit with a good reputation .  With the price of maintenance up here i figure (hope ) that I should get my money back around 20,000 miles.  I realize that a Maintenance Plan is not for everybody , but for me it's a good deal .

I suppose if someone has $1900 burning a hole in his pocket and decides he must spend it with the dealer, the service plan might be better than throwing it at an ESP that might never be used.  In my case, however, the $1900 would stay in my pocket and I'd do my own simple services (it's not rocket science) and take care of any repairs out of the $1900 I still have in my pocket, not some dealer's pocket.  BTW, the ESP gives you some protection if your dealer goes belly up since it is a national program.  What about these various maintenance plans, are they something you would just lose if your dealer closes the doors, or are they backed by a national company with some sort of protection?  I'd suggest it would be wise to find this out before handing anyone $1900.

Sounds like it works!  I think service plans and extended warranties should be a tailored choice and NOT a "blanketed good idea" for everyone.  It really depends on your riding habits and technical knowledge.  I am mechanically challenged, my brother brought his bike in for the 1,000 mile inspection and will never let a HD dealer touch it for maintenance, but he has the skill and knowledge.  The other factor as you described, a good dealer that makes it a worthwhile investment!  I run a car dealership and i see this stuff all the time.  It makes sense is some cases its just fear as if it were a security blanket.  Remember, we wouldn't do it if it wasn't profitable.  It's like a health club membership, everyone pays the dues, but the averages say that the largest percentage will not reap the benefits.
