California's wood covered bridges......
« on: December 29, 2011, 10:49:20 AM »

Did you know that California had so many?

After opening the link, click on the Bridge number highlighted in blue, on the left, to see a picture of the bridge.......

Thanks JCZ, I've always liked the old covered wooden bridges. Seems like a dying art form now.  Appreciate you bring it to our attention.

Will have to make it a destination for some of our day trips this summer.  Majority of those bridges are in Nor Cal. :2vrolijk_21:

I've made it to nine, basically all closer to Sacramento and two in Humboldt.   This would be an interesting check off list  for future rides... Thanks for sharing.  :2vrolijk_21:

Sounds like a nice road trip. A circuit of as many as you could do in a day or weekend.

We have a few out here (PA) that we do the circuit every other year or so. Only 9 or 10 though, with a bonus of 5 nearly identical steel open grate bridges thrown in to up the pucker factor.

Sacramento being the Sacramento Delta, we have more open grate bridges than I would care to count.  You can't move around the delta without crossing them going and coming, no matter where that's to. :nixweiss:

That must be what Porthole meant by "pucker factor". :huepfenlol2:  Or maybe he's talking about crossing one when the temps are below freezing.  :nervous:   That would be serious pucker factor. :o

Didn't know there were so many, been to the 2 in Stanislaus Co (Knights Ferry & Roberts Ferry).  We drove over the Roberts Ferry w/ a GoldWinger Friend after a rest stop at the nut shop for an ice cream.  :2vrolijk_21:

On the way back from Coulterville last Summer, we rode through Yosemite and stopped at Wowona.  Here is the covered bridge there.  Here is it's history and more photos:  Wowona Covered Bridge,

Funny story about Sad Sack and Gunny Sack, the two bears.  We have family pictures from when I was a kid.....cars would be lined up right in the road with bears on both sides as people fed the bears out of the car windows.  Sometimes a few brave soles would get out of the cars and get pretty close to the bears or their cubs before they'd throw down what ever food they had.....just for the experience of being close to the bears I suppose.   We certainly don't see wildlife (deer, elk, bear, raccoons, etc.) as plentiful in Yosemite as we did when I was a kid.  Faded memories.....

The 5 bridges I'm referring are typical open grate and listed as single lane but are striped for two. SO you have some fairly spacious grating and vehicles that can't ride between the lines

The open grate is the part that raises for the boats.  These bridges are every few miles, all over the delta.  Pucker factor when there's a semi coming at you.....half way in your lane.

yup that would be major pucker factor....   :'(

Heres a question on raised bridges and Tower Bridge in particular.  Last summer wife and I took lunch break at Crab Shack Joe's in Old Town and had a good window seat in line with Tower Bridge.. During the hour we were there, the Bridge alarm triggered and raised three times.. We noticed the bridge could be manned since there's a cubicle on top. Conversation started with others in the restaurant.. Someone say's yea, its a manned bridge and boaters radio in requesting it to raise, another guy says you dial in with your marine radio and enter a special q-tone and someone else says no,, you need a special control box in your boat.. So i never have figured out what triggers Tower Bridge and other raised bridges in general... I bet you know   :nixweiss:
