S&S DUEL INTAKE RUNNER
« on: December 31, 2011, 09:10:45 PM »

I have been really looking hard at this set up to go with my build and I'm wondering if anybody has installed this and did they really see the hp and torque increased that S&S  claims

Not sure I know what part you're asking about.  But the description begs a question.  Is it just yet another fancy air cleaner that happens to have a paired set of inlets that meet at the intake manifold?  Or is it actually a dual runner intake/throttle body?  If the latter the stock ECM won't know how to tune for it well.  S&S would probably also push you toward their ECM to make it run well.

While I can appreciate the concept, I think it is borderline cheesy for my taste. Sorry.

Maybe so, but, it's still nicer than this:

Got it.  An air cleaner.

A really good air cleaner compared to a very average entry level stock piece can make a real difference in output.  A measurable difference.  Which is to say rarely will make it a difference you feel in the seat of your pants from the saddle as an air cleaner change by itself.  We can convince itself we feel and notice a lot when we're trying to self-justify the expense of some of the things we do.

Guess what I'm trying to say is that's one huge crap of an expensive air cleaner.  I could spend 40% of that for a very good air cleaner and still have well over $300 left to go toward cams or other parts that would make a difference I'd actually feel.

Taste and aesthetic are also relative things.  But, to me and my eyes, that thing also screams real loud "hey, look at me, I really want you to look at me, c'mon look at me, I am too cool for your air cleaner, I AM an air cleaner STUD; I am... I am dammit, I really am!"  Of course that's just my impression 8) .

Its an air cleaner, large and ugly at best. No need for it, any SE air cleaner will probably flow more air and cost hundreds less.

How about something like this? It's different and kind of cool looking. Airflow, who knows?

To each his own of course.  And to many that's a more important way to consider it (i.e, looks cool but who knows if it works ok).  Intake is too important to consider in that order.  If air isn't good nothing else will be.  So first should be the consideration of function.  Does it work ok and, if so, does it look good enough to make me happy?  If it doesn't work really well than what it looks like shouldn't make a bit of difference.

True. I can't imagine any air system that would increase air flow significantly over the factory system. In fact, I would have to say that the newer CVO system is better than the old SE Heavy Breather assembly.

Although with everyone's input on the subject... which I can agree with for the most part... my only question I suppose would be this.

If (1), let's just say HD Heavy Breather, works using a single element... wouldn't having (2) elements in similar design only restrict the incoming air?  I mean, yeah, they're smaller per element, and they collect at a central point before entering the intake... but I would tend to think the smaller elements are also more tightly wound therefore restricting the intake volume.

It has been mentioned, and I often have to explain to my youngest... just because it looks "cool" doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to perform as claimed by advertising.

I still lean toward the theory of having (2) filter elements would restrict the airflow vs. a single element of similar design... but without the numbers, I'm probably completely wrong... as I've been before.   8)
