Metzler tires again.
« on: January 04, 2012, 09:20:36 AM »

I know the topic of Metzler tire problems has been debated about as much as any topic on tires can be. Speaking only for myself I’ve had just about all the major and popular tires on my Ultras over the years from the original D-402s, to the Metzler ME880s, Avon Venom, Dunlop E-3s and I am now back to the D-402. I liked the Metzlers but the sidewalls started showing small cracks in it, so I changed to the Avons.

Yesterday I went for a ride up the warm an sunny Southern California coast to have lunch at Neptunes Net, a popular stop for motorcycles. There I saw a bike with Metzler tire that had HUGE CHUNKS of it missing from the center of the tire. I was incredulous to this and had to take a picture of it with my phone.

According to one guy whose name I did not ask, the person who rides the bike likes to take jack rabbit starts and chirp the tire as much as he can.  Still, even with those riding habits, a new tire (it looked like a new tire to me and some of the others gawking at it) should not start breaking off in chunks.

We waited for the rider to come out which he never did. After a while I got bored and left.

That just does not look safe to me.

I am amazed that someone would actually be out riding that! I guess it could have just happened. I would never leave the garage with a tire looking like that! Its an accident waiting to happen. Blow outs on a bike are no fun!!!! JMHO  Face

Wow! Getting a flat on a bike is no fun but that's a blow out waiting to happen. Bad news

It's been a few years now since I crossed over from the thought of "the most important thing on a bike is the motor" to my thinking now....."the most important thing on a bike is the brakes and the tires". :2vrolijk_21:

That looks like a rider issue more than a tire issue.  A statistic waiting to happen.  Would love to know how that did happen.

Saw something like that happen a number of years ago.....a guy doing a burn out on those sharp edged botts dots that are usually on the yellow lines in the center of the road (the white line botts dots are usually smooth).  :nixweiss:

I've been accused a time or two of being an agressive rider.  I haven't had any problem.....sand, ice, wet, dry.....with OEM tires and that's what I continue to ride on. :nixweiss:

I wonder if there's a center mounted seat attachment bolt hitting the tire.  In the constant yearning to ride as low as possible, some folks put on short shocks or carry passengers who test the limits of rebound and coil bind...if ya know what I mean.

Looks like the bike was lowered to the extreme. Then it got a little drunk out, and the person he picked up at the bar was a little on the big boned side. Probably has a tennis shoe burned on the exhaust as well. I'm sure it was a night to forget. :D :D

Or.. the air ride suspension just gave out and the bolt at the rear of the seat contacted the tire with a vengence!

The dealer that i buy Metzler's from told me a few months ago that the tires that come from their plant in Germany where fine, But they have a plant in another country (Brazil i think) that they have had a lot of problems out of, wonder if this tire came from the other plant.  :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

Could it be an older tire, there has been a lot of issues with tires that are new but sitting for a long time. This url is about car tires but I think the same applies to bike tires also. I've had Metzlers on my bikes for a long time and never had any issue.

Had some ME880's before and they never looked that bad. I say that is abuse not a tire problem!
