05 103 Starter Kicking Out???
« on: January 04, 2012, 11:41:34 PM »

When engine is hot when restarting after a short stop(5 Min's) something kicks out during cranking. It sounds like somebody hits the engine with a sledge hammer. Embarrassing when everybody at the station looks at you. I read on here about the Compensator causing such problems. I have ESP on the bike so I took it to the dealer and and talked with them they checked the compensator and says there is nothing wrong with it. Now they are saying it needs compression releases to stop the problem. I am not buying into this theory.
Anybody have any ideas on this?? Thanks for the Help

Find another shop with a tech that knows what they are doing. The problem is most likely your starter clutch. If you on the ESP then you can also take it to a indy shop as well.

The guys dealing with compensator issues that lead to weird/hard starting and other issues have later bikes than our 05s.  The old reliable compensator in our bikes is, well; old and reliable.  Follow Jim's lead and consider the starter suspect.

How old is the battery? Start with the easy stuff first like checking connections and grounds.

had the same issue with my 05 103 (high comp), started after some 10.000 m.

Got manual compression releases installed, no change wheater they were engaged or not.

Go looking for an other solution - mine got never fixed until the enginge broke entirely some 15.000 m later.

Hd-dude is giving you the best advice.  Had the same problem with my bike, changed starter clutch and went to 84 tooth ring and pinion gear (my option).  I also found that the jack shaft extension for the pinion gear was hanging up in the outer primary cover due to sleeve bearing coming loose.  Should check that too, but the starter clutch is the likely culprit.

Sounds like the ring gear might be bugged, or perhaps the starter clutch.
Doubt if the spur gear is harmed as they are hardened.
Either way, you've got to get in the primary.
BUT, you need to address the root of the issue.
Take a look at the battery(load test), connections, etc.
