Heated Grips
« on: January 05, 2012, 10:11:47 AM »

Guys I have a set of Heli bars on my 09 SERG and can not run the wires on the inside of the bars. Will the HD grips work if I need to run the wires outside the bars? Any aftermarket solutions better?

HD's heated grips can be wired externally.  In fact if you read their P&A install docs they're not suggested to be wired internally.

Thanks, are they the best choice?

While not every user has had failures it does seem like it sometimes when you read the anecdotes.  The HD branded grips have been problematic for a long time and do have a much higher incidence of failure than I'd be comfortable with using.

Ok do I have another choice?

The alternative piece that's got the most play here is from a company called Heat Demons.  They work well and do so without issue.  I'm not sure, however, that they're really intended for external wiring.

You could drill the bar to bring wires external in the correct place and shield the originally unshielded loom.  But they're still not made such that I wouldn't worry about them holding up well being occasionally yanked on by wind or people.  Just not sure.  A question for tech support at the company.  The couple of times I've spoken to them they've beem both easy and very forthcoming on any question.

We bought Heat Deamons for my wifes bike.  Not installed yet but the wiring for the heaters themselves is inside the handlebar.  The power wires run on the outside of the handlebar.

The big advantage to Heat Demons is that you keep your choice of grips.
Have had them since I first read about them, very happy with the product.

I pretty sure heat demons will not work on my bike. The bars are almost solid at the top.

Anyone had issues with Heat Deamons and Throttle By Wire?  Dealership says they do not work well together.

They work fine, the bars need to be reamed out by 1/16 of an inch if I recall.  I had head demons installed my in my Wild Ones handle bars.  Before I had them installed I told the dealership about it.  After I picked up the bike, they said "do you know you have to have the handle bars reamed?"   Most dealers don't have a clue even when you tell them.    :nixweiss:

Try HotGrips. I had them on my old bike and they are great.
