Rockford Stereo Project
« on: January 09, 2012, 03:34:22 PM »

This past August I had the misfortune or I guess you can say I was fortunate enough to survive a 6 point buck hitting my RG when I was going 60 mph.  The only damage to the bike was a cracked saddle bag lid, but the deer did not survive.
Instead of replacing the lid I thought this was a great excuse to upgrade the stereo.  Back in 09 when I purchased the bike I installed the Hawg Wired DCS Series amp and a pair of SX Series speakers in the front. Since I had a detachable Tour Pak with a set of Polk speakers installed I used the stock radio amp to drive the Tour Pak and the Hawg Wired amp to drive the front SX speakers.  The front speakers sounded great but when the Tour Pak was on the bike I had to fade the front speaker down because the radio amp could not keep up with the front speakers.
So, after many months of research I decided to go with Bikers Choice “Rock-N-Ride” Lids

and the Rockford Ultra “Super Stereo” stereo kit from Paul Yaffe’s  Bagger Nation

The kit included the following:
1.   Set of Shallow 5.5 Power Speaker
2.   Speaker Adapter
3.   Rockford-Fosgate 4 Channel Amplifier
4.   Heat Sink Single Premium Amp Mount Road Glide
5.   Speaker Audio Lid Kit
6.   Power 6.5 Component Tweeter/Crossover

1st Challenge

My goal was to keep my saddle bags empty and mount two amps and 4 crossovers inside the fairing.  To do this I purchased Yaffe’s amp mounting brackets which bolts to the two bolts on the front of the fairing.

The Hawg Wire amp was already mounted on the side of the radio along with one of the two crossovers

Considering I have two amps and four crossovers mounted inside the fairing it is still clean but there is not much space left for any additional equipment.

The 2nd challenge was were to mount the Tweeters  :-\
I did not want to drill holes in the fairing and the sound was very flat without the tweeter.  Again I reached out to HogTune and picked up a empty case which I then mounted the RockFord tweeters in and I must say the sound is GREAT!!!

The 3rd Challenge was mounting the Hog Wire speakers in the Tour Park speaker pods.   :-\

The speakers are about 1 inch deeper then the pods :'(

I used 2 Harley speaker adapters to add the additional height needed to the pod to give me the space for the speaker.

Picture of the Tour Pak and Saddle Bag Lids with the speakers mounted  :)

As you can see from the pciture the left speaker in the tour pak pod is just sitting in the pod with out the spacers.

The Saddle Bag lid speakers are the 5.5 Rockford power speakers.

Another view of the rear speakers  :)

I must say the sounds is great !!   :bananarock: :bananarock:  And I can't wait for the true test ride......   ::)

The saddle bag lids, speaker grills and HogTune tweeter case are out to the painter. I will post finished pictures of the whole bike once I have everything back together.

That's a significant amount of impressive work!
Kudos on keeping it clean with all that stuffed in the fairing  :)

Trust me ... I know that is no easy task!

Nice job on getting all of that equipment inside the fairing. Can't wait to see everything after the paintwork.

The sound sitting on the lift is unbelievable  ;D  Especially with the Tour Pak on at 1/2 power the sound is Crystal clear, no distortion...  very impressed with the RockFord speakers they can take the power and have very little distortion.  I personally like a lot of bass and they can deliver it without breaking up  :)  The real test will be on the highway hitting 80 to 100 mph but that will have to wait until the lids come back from the painter  :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:
