HELP-Deatachable Tour Pak-no audio and intercom connections
« on: January 15, 2012, 07:00:22 AM »

Hi,
After spending many hours making the Tour Pak detachable on my FLHTCUSE2 and removing the amp under the Tour Pak the following scenario exists:
1. No passenger audio or intercom communications
2. Audio and intercom still works for rider, however,
3. Only have sound from rear speakers using speaker switch.
Is this how it should be after removing the amp?
Have I re-connected the audio connections up incorrectly?
How can I sort this out as I have no reference for the various connections (I know I should have labelled them before disconnecting) other than the colour of the wires leading into the Deutsch plugs and some of them are not complete colour matches?
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Ed

Ed,
I too am in the middle of this projectfor my '08.  Have the pak off and am currently putting together a parts list for amp, SEEG style fairing tweeters, pak mounts and detachable hardware, sleek seat that I can use with my backrest, licence plate frame.  Also want want the rear speakers to work if possible when pak is on.  I too woild like some easy quick disconnects for the electrical.  Any help out there?  I have read all the sticky links and welcome any and all suggestions.  I haven't purchased any HD accessories in the last year or so.  Who are the best 20% off internet dealers now?  Thanks....Jeff

Excellent pics.  Thanks.  Does anyone know if the stock street glide seat will fit the '08 cvo ultra and rider backrest?

Without knowing exactly how you connected the wiring after removing the amp, it's impossible to suggest what you should do now.  Correctly wired, your CVO Ultra minus the amp should have the same audio function that a non-CVO Ultra has, so the passenger intercom, etc. should work.

Suggestion:  Use the wiring diagrams in the 2007 HD Touring model service manual and CVO Ultra supplement to replicate what the non-CVO Ultra has for audio functions.

did you disconnect the cables that run the switches for the intercom and the intercom plug?

in other words is the reason you have no intercom is that there are no plugs and switches?

the easy part of making a tour pak removable is the physical connection - the hard part is the wiring - its not made to be easy to remove the tour pak

One of the dealers in our area said they were not designed to be detachable. Too many wires that run everything. Asked if they would do it and they said NO.

Thats why lots of forum members have completed the job successfully themselves

I made my tour pak detachable on my 2011 CVO Road Glide with one twist.
I leave the detachable rack on and just remove the tour pak itself.
I wanted the amp to stay in place on the detachable rack and just made a cover for the top of the rack out of some oak and aluminum bar stock.
When I want to take the tour pak off I just remove the stock seat and unplug the speakers and lights, throw a Street Glide seat on and mount the rack cover.
I need to look for the part numbers of the connectors I used. It was pretty easy if you can do a little soldering and crimping of the pins and sockets. I welded some bolts to the metal plate in the tour pack and use nylock nuts to secure the tour pak to the rack.
The detachable rack kit that Harley sells has most of what you need to detach the CB and Radio antenna connections too.
The tour pak must weigh 40 lbs and removing it when you don't need it works well for me.
I just mount a detachable back rest and throw on a light weight day bag on if I want to go for an overnight trip. For any big trips, I throw the tour pak back on.
I'll put together a list of what I used for this project. I also attached a couple of photos an can send more if you email me.

Hi Carl. Do you have those wiring diagrams handy to share? There appears to be a small black plug running from the intercom connector which is cble tied to the wirning that goes into the tour pak-the plug does not appear to connect to anything.

If you search the Electronics Toys and Gadgets forum and include my username, you should find the wiring diagrams for the 2010 CVO Touring models.  Your '07 is essentially the same with the exception that your audio sent the outputs from the HK's front and rear channels to the amp under the tour pak, and the amp sent the signals back to the front speakers and tour pak speakers.  On the '10, the amp only receives the front two channels from the HK radio, then amplifies those and sends them to the front speakers and tour pak speakers.

Buying the Service Manuals for your bike is the best money you'll spend if you do any work on your bike--for under $80 they're the best value I know of from HD.

Good luck with your project.

Hope I can turn this mess into something.  I quess the consensus is the Hawg tunes amp to replace the stock amp.  I've got J&M 2 ohm speakers in the tour pak, not sure what's in the fairing.  I would like an in fairing antennae and SG style gauge replacement tweeters.  I don't want glove box speakers.  Tour pak doesn't appear to be a big deal to attach.  It's the mess of wiring that's a bit scary.

Check the various sticky threads here: http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=18334.0
for the quick-detachable rack and docking kit part numbers. Part numbers may have changed after 2007 but I'm not sure so check with your dealer first. The wiring is another story that I am trying to figure out. Without the amp connected, I lose passenger intercom and front speaker functionality. The rider intercom works without amp connected. I'll get to the bottom of it-eventually.
Good luck with your project.
