Oil filter removal - whats the best way
« on: January 20, 2012, 07:32:30 PM »

I bought a plastic oil filter "socket" a while back and the thing never worked. I've been using the Screwdriver method but that's a bit of a pain. What's the best method for getting them off?

The best way is to buy K&N filters with the 17mm nut on the end, and then you can just spin it off with your socket wrench.  KN-171C for chrome, KN-171B for black.  And regardless of brand, make sure you lubricate the gasket when you install the new filter and don't overtighten.  Makes one heck of a big difference in removal effort.

What about the oil that gets all over the place when removing the filter? I received one of the HD orange plastic oil catcher things for Christmas but I can't get it to fit under the filter to catch the oil...

I use cardboard cut to fit under the filter when changing oil.  Use it once and throw it away. No mess that one or two paper towels can't handle.

Oil absorb pad cut to fit under the filter keeps oil from running all over, not much to clean up after new filter is installed.

I've never seen these filters but they sound like the prefect solution. Where have you bought them and do you have a part number?

It is prelubed with something like a tacky grease.  I still wipe a little fresh motor oil on the gasket before I install the filter anyway, just to be sure.  A little extra lube won't hurt anything, but the opposite when combined with overtightening and high temps can make removal of any filter a real PITA.

I use a plastic botttle that fits around filter cut out 1/2 leavine a small lip at bottom. When changing oil I put a small rag under filter slide bottle under filter and when removing filter drops in bottle leaving just a few drips on rag.
