HD Radar Detector and GPS
« on: July 10, 2006, 02:31:37 PM »

Wanted to share with the forum what I was able to do;  I added the HD Radar Detector and the HD/Garmin GPS to my dash.  I was told that they didn't work because of the dash pad.  I had the units mounted and then took the dash pad to an upholstery shop and for $80 had them modify it to fit.  It worked great and I think it looks cool.  [smiley=banana.gif] I am able to hear the directions for the GPS through my Aux on the radio, so I get both visual directions and audible.  The only issue I ran into is the mount for the GPS.  I had to put a screw in the cradle to the fairing mount as the unit will fall off if you hit a bump.  The actual GPS unit comes off the cradle, so I just leave the cradle attached and problem solved.

Harley makes a handle bar mount now for the GPS...I have the faring mount GPS, got it for Christmas...told the wife it would not fit with the dash fairing...she insisted the HD Shop said it would.  The handle bar mount was missing a part so I could not install it yet, probably will wait until my front fairing is changed for paint to install wiring.  HD also offers a car mount with a cigarette liter hook up.  I use that in my car..makes the HD universal.

I just found out about the handlebar mount.  Does it fit either the right of left side?  Also, when you wire the GPS, let me know if you are able to wire it internally.  In otherwords, I have mine wired into the Aux on the front of the radio, and would like to wire it to the back of the radio instead.  Let me know what can be done to wire it internally.  Thanks  By the way, I really love having the GPS as we do a lot of HOG chapter rides and it makes it pretty easy to plan the route and than just follow the GPS directions. I have tried the handlebar mount and it is only just acceptable.  I would like to do the same modification you did but need a couple of additional pictures...close up.  Can you send or post?

Big Al,

Send me your email and I will forward you the original pictures that you can enlarge.  I had to reduce the size of the pictures so that I could post.  Also, give me a call so I can make sure you are aware of the issues I already went through.  Work: 408-853-9320  cell: 408-242-3857.  Glad to help [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Looksd great.  I saw the Escort at the HD shop yesterday and while I drive 130 miles a day I have gone without a detector in my car, but the way we ride I may have to think about it for the bike.

rjob,

The cost of the HD Radar detector is actually same as the standard Escort for the car. ( I have one in my car). So the only additional cost is the HD mount, which is about $50.  Definitely worth the price considering one ticket can end up costing you not only the fine, but an increase in your insurance.  These detectors have save me at least 3 tickets [smiley=nervous.gif]  Of course if you want to drive the speed limit, I guess you really don't need one [smiley=nixweiss.gif] But then why have such a hot bike?
