Hard to change gears
« on: January 27, 2012, 04:22:32 PM »

Went for a ride today and as I was leaving the driveway, I couldn't change gears. It was like locked in 1st. After some real tugging, got it into 2nd and still had problems. But it got better over a mile and eventually worked itself out. The bike had been in the garage for a week unmoved. Butl my rides a week apart is fairly normal. A few more points: this has never happened before from a cold start but has happened a few times over the past months when on long rides. In the middle of a 3 hour ride, it would be brutal to change gears. After a while it worked fine. Last, trany oil is good and I just had my 10k service done a month ago. Has this happened to any of you? Any ideas on what's up? Should I be worried? Thanks

Does it seem that the clutch is releasing completely, or is the bike still trying to move with the clutch lever pulled all the way in?  The reason I ask is that a severely dragging clutch can cause hard shifting, and the Harley hydraulic clutches have been known to exhibit problems with either excessive air in the system (which would make it a pretty much continuous problem) or with defective actuators which could present as an intermittent problem.  I think I'd look at the clutch system first, then the actual transmission.

As for your question about being worried, the answer is yes.  What you describe is not even remotely normal, and the odds are that whatever is wrong will get worse.  It's kind of rare for mechanical stuff to "heal" itself without intervention.  If it's still in warranty, get it on record at your friendly Harley dealer ASAP.

Done. Went to Mancuso's and they changed the actuator. Had to wait a week since they needed to bring one in...not sure if the CVO has a different actuator than the other bikes. In any case, they said this was a common occurence on bikes...over to the forum on that question. Good news it was a ~$300 job done under warranty so I only paid the $50 deduct.

Now you have to try the Mzoil synthetic gear oil in the trany. You wont believe the difference!! I did it to my bike and the shifting is like butter. I actually notice a big difference.

What is mzoil?

Good question.  Those lovely folks at Google don't have a clue about it, so I'm guessing a typo or it's a top secret product of the military-industrial complex.

I second the Redline Heavy.....easy to find neutral and virtually eliminated that 1st gear clunk.

I think he might have left the "A"  off
...and traded an s for a z. Maybe he should have bought that lower case 's' that was for sale.
