Anyone know anything about Coins
« on: July 11, 2006, 07:59:25 PM »

Someone said something about coins on one of the threads as a source of hidden treasure. Does anyone on the site collect coins. I have a couple of old silver dollars I was wondering about. One of them is an 1880 E PLURIBUS UNUM (Lady Liberty) on the front Bald Eagle with sheaves and arrowns on the back.  The other is a 1922 LIBERTY with the Lady with rays coming off her crown and a sorta side/backshot of Eagle on the back. My grandmother gave them to me when I was a little kid. Surprised I still had them.

Topic is: "Anybody Know Anything About Coins"?

My answer is nope; don’t have much left after joining this site.

All my silver has turned to chrome.

All my green has turned to "go fast".

I'm not broke, but I'm badly bent w/a smile on my face. ;D

I'm not a coin expert but because it's pouring rain right now and I'm a bit bored, I decided to beat on the internet a little bit.  Not sure what information you're seeking but it sounds like you have a Morgan Dollar and  Peace Dollar.  I Hope this helps:

This looks like a reliable site:

Red
       Exact Match  Any idea what they're worth. I'm not thinking a lot of money, but if they like $100 or something I suppose I should put them somewhere a little safer than a desk drawer. Both are in perfect shape

Sounds like a safe bet you should take care of them.  Put them in plastic sleaves.  hey my son collects state quarters and has a whole locked case for them and they're all individually packaged.  I'm sure he'd be willing to trade you 4 to 1 ;)

Again, I'm no expert but, like you, I have a number of silver dollars and I keep them in a bank safe deposit box.  As for what they're worth, I'd recommed seeing a pro coin dealer/appraiser but here's a couple of sites to check.  Lots more info there than you may want.  Take a look on the right side of the screen at the "significant examples".  Those are documented recent sales of the coins in your possession.  The prices are all over the place.

1880 Morgan:

1922 Peace:

[Edit to add]

Here's some more prices/info varying by mintmark and condition.  Let's you specify what mintmark and then gives a range of prices depending on condition:

1880 Morgan:

1922 Peace:

An 1880s Morgan that's been in circulation but still with good relief and otherwise in nice shape, probably in the $20-$40 range realistically.  The Peace could be worth more depending on a variety of factors.  But with the descriptions provided probably the same range.

I do collect coins, mostly proof coins, but am fairly knowledgable in all.  I also have a number of reliable sources for current coin values and have just looked up the two coins in question.

First let me say there are two big things that effect a coins value; how rare a coin is which is usually based on age and the number minted, and condition which will depend on if it has been in circulation and how it has been kept, age also playing a role here.  When it comes to coins there is also a fact most do not know that will effect how rare it is, coins minted in different locations are considered to be different varieties of the coin so have different values associated with them.  So while a coin that has a large number of coins minted in a given year at one mint may have little value, that same year a different mint could have minted very few of the same coin making its value very high.  These coins are identified by what is called a mint mark, which is a very small letter, usually following the date.  There can also be no mint mark which just means it was the one mint that does not use a mark.

Now for the coins in question.  Since I do not know the mint mark or condition I can only give you a range for each possible mint.  Since the coins have been handled by human hands and stored in a desk they will not be graded in any of the grades of MS60 thru MS70, MS standing for Mint State and 70 being a perfect coin.  But just for the purpose of showing how the mint the coin was produced at will effect its value I will give you the values of the different mints for these two coins in one of the best condition for each.

For the 1922 Peace Dollar in MS66;
1922 no mint mark = $785
1922 D = $2,000
1922 S = $20,000

For the 1880 Morgan Dollar in MS65;
1880 S = $230
1880 no mint mark = $800
1880 CC = $1,650
1880 O = $26,000

Now for a realistic value of your coins. Ranging in condition from VF (Very Fine) to AU (Almost Uncirculated).  Uncirculated meaning Mint State.

For the 1922 Peace Dollar;

1922 no mint mark = $15 - $18
1922 D = $15 - $18
1922 S = $15 - $18

For the 1880 Morgan Dollar;
1880 S = $16 - $22
1880 no mint mark = $16 - $22
1880 O = $16 - $27
1880 CC = $200 - $300

As you can see from the values above, where a coin was minted and its condition make a huge difference in its value.

Thanks for the info.

From your post I'd say the Morgan is worth around $25. Haven't looked at the Peace that closely yet. I might have them checked out by a coin shop, but it doesn't appear that they need to be put into a safe deposit box.

I love this site, it's almost like Alice's Restaurant
