Ridin' the Natchez Trace
« on: July 11, 2006, 08:58:14 PM »

Made a great trip to south Mississippi last month for a first time visit to historic Natchez followed by a beautiful ride up the Natchez Trace. If you haven't been, put it on your list of "Top Rides" for the future. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Nice pics, ez [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]..that's on my list, as I've done it in a cage, but not on a scoot.  Did you go all the way North?  The whole thing is beautiful, and Natchez is a cool place too.  Did you have a chance to visit the area down by the river where all the pubs are? Spectacular views everywhere along the mighty Mississippi. That's the Delta Queen docked at Natchez down-under.

Only rode the Trace to Jackson but it stretches all the way to Nashville. That's over 400 miles. We wanted to visit Vicksburg and tour the National Battlefield so we got off the Trace with regrets.

Nice pics. That is on my list along with many more. How are gas stations and eateries on the road? I've heard it's not heavily traveled. Is that correct or am I thinking of something else.   :-?

Peaceful riding without any trucks or commercial vehicles. Speed limit is 50 but after riding it - that's fast enough. Too much to look at.
No gas or eateries on the Trace itself. There are exits near most sizeable towns where you can get off and go into town - then return to the Trace. I want to go back in the fall and ride all of it.

That looks like a nice place to ride. I've heard that name before but was unaware that it was a good place to ride a scooter. Thanks for the info. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Dood...it's a great road, with beautiful trees, historical landmarks, swamps, hills...would be a great ride, guaranteed.

Resurrecting an old topic...

We will be doing the this road on our way to Kansas City in April...will be getting on in Nashville but only plan on brief stops.  It will beat the interstate any day but I have a question.  it is about 444 miles long and am wondering if it can be done in a day assuming we do not do the sightseeing stuff...just riding, break for fuel and riding some more.  Right now, I have us stopping in Jackson, MS then heading west off the parkway to Texarkana but if it is worth it, I would consider going all the way to Natchez, about 80-100 mor miles.  I can't see us getting there much before 7 so we would just be looking for dinner and a few adult beverages.

Should we push through to Natchez for Dinner?  Are the river front pubs worth it?

The Trace is a very "lazy" ride through some very picturesque country. Keep in mind it is a controlled highway with no commercial vehicles allowed and a speed limit of 50 mph.  I wouldn't think Nashville to Jackson would be a problem in a day. That would cut about 65 miles off the total for the entire Trace. My advice would be to exit the Trace at Jackson and head west on I-20 to Vicksburg to spend the night. Vicksburg is a very nice and very historic Civil War town with good places to stay and plenty of things to do. The Civil War cemetery there was one our favorites.

B...Because of the speed limit, and it is enforced, it's going to take some time to do the whole 400 miles.  You will have to exit the Trace to get fuel, but generally the fuel is nearby...just don't cut it too close.  Natchez waterfront is a neat place...lot's of History there as well...some nice Pubs and places to eat right on the Riverfront. We stayed in a B&B when we were there.  I have not been to Vicksburg, but hear it is a nice place as well.  The Trace is different than most anything you'll ever travel because of the limited access...Like the BRP in some ways, but with a lot of trees overhaning the road, particularly the southern parts.

Thanks!

It is the type of road Anne and I like...50mph speed limit is fine...but we will keep it moving with only the occasional stop for rest and fuel...and Harley Dealer of course.  I have it mapped out from Nashville with the first major stop at the HD shop near Muscle Shoals which is about 20 miles east off the Trace.  I will get gas at that exit then get gas next in Tupolo.   Then gas in Kosciusko and Jackson.

Vicksburg is an option...
