Anyone running with just a HD flash???
« on: July 12, 2006, 09:54:26 PM »

Anyone change out their pipes (mine will be the SE 2/1 tuneables) and did just the HD flash for the chip?  Is the bike running clean and are you happy with it?

Or in hind sight, would you have gone SERT or PC?

I need to make my mind up by this weekend on whether to do the HD flhas, SERT or PC.   I will be happy with the HD flash if the bike will run fine as I did that with my 03 and never had a problem.

My experience is.... the HD flash is just a "fits all" band aid. I have a SERT on my '05 SEEG  with the DTT Wego System to tune it with. I opted for the SERT just so I wouldn't have any extra stuff hangin off  the bike and if I had to have it serviced on the road it wouldn't be a problem. Believe it or not>>>>>>some HD Dealers just flat don't like Power Commanders>>> Whatever >> See you all in Sturgis>>> Greg

I put on the screamin eagle pipes and stage 1 air filter, dealer said the flash works real well with that setup so i paid $160?? for the flash, bike backfired terribly dealer said "yea that flash always does that you should really buy the race tuner" which I did (from another dealer) $420?? and tuned the dam thing myself,it wasn't that hard , bike runs great now.

Go with the SERT or PC, I'm working with the dealer in Bellingham right now and the MoCo is struggling big time with all the lean bikes.  SERT will at least give you more than the one time shot of the chip.

Sounds good if you can hit it with the flash.  Just seems risky with the trouble many are having.  Good for you though.

I am also currently running the flash with the SE pipes and the stage 1 A/C.  No popping or anything.  For now I don't plan on a SERT or other changes.

Seems I am one of the lucky ones with this bike ('cept for the paint [smiley=angry.gif]).

How did you tune it yourself??? I was under the impression you needed to dyno it to do it?

Add one more to the list who ain't satisfied with the flash. SE slip-ons and Ness Big Sucker; be adding SERT real soon. Got it in my hands, just have to decide; do-it-myself or dealer.

S/E air filter, V&H basic slip ons and flash/download (don't know for sure, but thought it was stage 1). Starts immediately, no backfire, good looking plugs, pulls so hard to 100 mph I can't believe something this big and heavy can get up there that fast.

I'm with Naitram and cvTony-I couldn't ask mine to run any better from cold startups, driveability, or hot starts.

I did the SE Pro Pipes, the "Roll your own" A/C with K&N filter, got the flash for that setup....all this was done prior to delivery.  Bike starts fine, runs fine, no sputtering, backfiring....so far, I'm a happy camper with the way the bike runs/sounds.

I'll throw my 2 cents in and start out by asking a question:  Did your bike run decently stock?  If it did, the chances are that the calibration download will run OK.  If, like myself and many others, your stock setup ran like chit, you will find that the download does not magically fix all that wasn't right to start with.  There is just too much variation from bike to bike for a "one size fits all" calibration to run well on all bikes.  Maybe if H-D had a little more consistency in their component parts, and a good closed loop engine management system, we wouldn't have to worry about stuff like this.

As for advice, if you fall into the group whose stock bike had driveability issues, save some cash and forget the dowload.  Apply the $150 plus labor toward a SERT, PC, or aftermarket ECM replacement. JMHO

funny you should ask.  I have < 300 miles but yesterday I noticed that the bike seems like it is mildly surging at slower speeds sub 3k rpm.

I am leaning towards the SERT but my friend who will do it for me is usually busy, so I will have to be patient.  Besides, I want to get close to 1k miles on the bike before I do any pipes on it.
