Boom Audio bass ports
« on: February 09, 2012, 01:36:03 PM »

I have an 11' SERG and I saw the Boom audio bass port kit in HD yesterday,  (PN76000013)

I have searched the form and can not find any reviews/info. Can anyone help me out?

1- I think I have to have the amp software upgrade done to increase the bass output

2- Has anyone added the ports and can you advise if the $60+ is worth the time and money?

I showed the item to my local stereo guys and they seem to think I will gain 2 to 3 DBL's of bass. they are recommending a "hockey puck" type vibration unit that is mounted under the tour pack on top of the amp that uses the bass signal from the amp vibrate the unit. They swear that every one of these they have installed has had incredibly positive feedback and they told me that if anyone has seen a movie at a Cobb Theatre, these are the units installed under the movie seats. Their theory is that bass is better felt and does not always have to be heard.

I have gained too much information today!!!

Hope you all can enlighten me.

Thanks,

I found a bunch of threads. Sounds to me for $60 the upgrade is well worth it. My dealer confirmed mu '11 SERG has the "B" amp, so the upgrade can be done.

Gabe, did you install them yourself? I read the directions and it sounds pretty straight forward, but I am thinking 2.5 hs of labor compared to dilling into a $40K bike means the $200 in labor for HD does not sound too outlandish!

I just did a quick search and found this.....

I have the Boom Speakers front & rear on my SE Ultra. They have much better sound than stock. I put the bass ports in the tour pac also, not much help there. To my understanding, in order to get good bass response you have to have the new amp that is on the 2011's because the 2010 and older amp filters out some of the bass. Why....No one Knows.

It sounds like the amp needs to have a data upgrade to be completely effective.  I don't know the slightest thing about any of this but I'd start with the data upgrade 1st before drilling holes in my TP based on the reply above.

The amp upgrade provides more low end (bass) sound to exit the speakers (in laymans terms as I know enough about electronics to get myself in trouble), sooooo, if no upgrade done, then the ports work, but not as much or as noticible as when the upgrade is done.

From the H-D website:

Boom!™ Audio Bass Booster Tour-Pak® Port Kit

This Bass Booster Port Kit provides significant improvements in bass response without adding a subwoofer, and has no impact on usable Tour-Pak® carrier cargo capacity. When installed, the open port permits the speaker pod to "breathe", reducing the compression effect that limits speaker cone travel. You hear a 21% increase in bass response for better sound with a fuller bottom end, and an 82% reduction in peak distortion for accurate bass reproduction. Noticeable improvement is gained with both Original Equipment and Boom!™ Audio High Performance Speakers. The kit contains black-anodized aluminum ports, stainless steel audio-transparent grills, and unique Sound Sealing technology to give you that Boom!™ you were looking for.

76000013

Fits '06-later FLHTCU, FLHTCUTG, FLTRU and FLHTK models. Not compatible with '11 CVO™ FLHTCUSE6. Also fits models equipped with King Tour-Pak® and Boom!™ Audio Rear Speaker Pod Kit. Does not fit with Boom!™ Audio High Output Sound System P/N 76418-06 or 76418-06A. Dealer Digital Technician software update is required. Dealer installation is recommended.

MSRP US $79.95

Did mine back in Nov 2010 and did make a difference I thought I had posted in here but just looked and couldnt find it  I felt it was the best $60 I have spent on the bike did the install myself took about 1-1/2 hrs and a little stress but very happy ... had the dealer do the amplifier flash free when they had it hooked up to digital tech while looking into a warranty issue .

2 inch hole saw about $20.00 then  drilling into bike is not as hard when your saving money for another upgrade

Here are the installation instructions for the bass port kit:

http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US/Media/downloads/Service/isheets/-J05154.pdf

I recently installed the kit with aftermarket 6.5" speakers in the pods and driven by the RF PBR300x4 amp--sound was impressive, though I have yet to roadtest the set-up.  Installation was very easy--for all the criticism HD takes for poor instructions, these were very good and easy to follow.  The required 2" hole saw is readily available at your local  big box home improvement store, and with the supplied template virtually foolproof to use.

You can also PM TIF2 who also installed the bass port kit and likes it a lot.

I did the install myself, and eearlier this week had the dealer flash the amp.  I didn't notice any differance after the flash.

Does anyone have any information how I can verify that they put the correct files in for the upgrade?

The install was pretty easy, i removed the speakers, drilled the pilot hole using the template, and to make the liner holes work out I reinstalled the liner and after removing the speaker pods drilled back into the liner from the outside through the pilot hole.  Then i drilled the larger holes.

Anyone try it on a '06 or '07 SEUC with the Leather Tourpack?  Although the pod screws don't line up the same, it does seem like it would work with the right template. I just wonder if the thicker tourpak with the leather will be to wide for the tube length?  Hate to find out after the fact, the pieces won't mate!

As with all things concerning the HK audio system, call Tony at Iron Cross Audio and he can answer your question.

Last summer I had my bike connected to the Digital Technician at my local dealer, and the tech showed me on the screen a list of what had been added to my HK; it displayed the Intercom, fader, and an amp download (which was a mystery for me since I hadn't asked to have it done).

I expect your dealer could do the same for you--just hook up the DT's data link to the ECU and it will display what's been done.

Update after input from Carl,  I went back to the dealer and had them check the flash, the tech didn't install the correct flash for the bass ports, so they did the proper update for me.  The bass ports do make a differance after the flash. I hear a fuller sound from the rear speakers, and i was able to move the fader from two bars towards the rear to one bar, which makes the front louder...
