Handlebars not straight?
« on: February 10, 2012, 11:37:50 AM »

Although this hasn't been a big issue, ever since I got this 06 SEUC, when going straight, the handlebars are turned a bit to the right. When I've had the tires changes I mentioned this, and the HD dealer double-checked to make sure the rear axle especially was exactly straight. However, the bars are still off the the right.  I kind of gave up, but now that I'm preparing to rip everything apart, is there something else that I should be looking for? Thoughts?

Treeman had the same issue with an an '08 SEUC.   Sorry to say he could never get it perfect.  The dealer insisted it was "within spec."  I am sorry this doesn't help you but at least you know you're not crazy!

Have the same problem on my wife's 08 Deluxe and the dealer says it too is within spec. Doesn't seem to affect handling though, just looks crazy from the seat position.

Providing nothing is bent sometimes the riser bolts get offset a bit in the bushings. The way we fix it is to loosen the riser bolts a turn or two and slightly loosen top clamp and pull the bars the direction they need to go. Hold in place while having another tighten things up. Typically this will straigten things out.

:2vrolijk_21:    Excellent point.  I think folks tend to forget the bars are rubber mounted (or urethane mounted).  I remember having a similar issue with a Dyna many years ago, and having the bars misaligned was a situation I couldn't live with (I'm anal about symmetry and alignment).  Loosening the riser bolts, then twisting the bars in the desired direction while holding the front tire fixed the problem.

Had the same problem with my 09 Deluxe.  When I purchased it new they had chromed the front forks, so I always thought that it was from swapping these forks.  I spoke with the dealer and expressed my concerns and of course they could never see what I was seeing  :nixweiss:

Thanks - I am swapping out the bars during the winter layup so I'll try that trick.
