Fairing removal/installation tips
« on: February 12, 2012, 07:43:25 PM »

Hello all

New owner here. I have a 2012. I am having trouble installing and removing the fairing. Any tips?  Is it more difficult when new or cold out?  Are the wires tricky?

How many keep the fairing on all the time versus ride naked?

cover your passing lamps and your front fender. Old socks work good on the lamps to keep from scratchin the paint when you take the fairing off.

Thank you. Great tip.  Is there any risk of scratching the headlight or forks while exhibiting moderate care?

Put a little vaseline on the rubber grommets = on and off much easier.

and make double triple sure you have a firm hold on the windshielf/fairing while putting it on and off.  It is a little deceiving as far as the weight and last time I checked, gravity still exists! :coolblue:

Wow. How much time does that take?  I was thinking of placing a rag over it just to be safe.

Aren't we talking about a softail convertable???  There would be no need to unplug the headlight?? Or am I wrong?? Protecting the passing lamps and unplugging the headlight sounds like a batwing fairing bike....

Yea, you'd unplug the power cord that goes to the amp in the fairing.

But isn't that it as far a wiring goes?

For the 2011 model yes, not sure of the 2012.

When putting the fairing on I puch the power cord in the top right hand side of the light and intall the fairing.  Seems like anything else the fairing is tight until it's on and off a few times, the hardest part is ensureing the power cord is fed good so you can grab it with your hand to connect it. Hope this helps some.

Pork-
Have you figured out an elegant solution where to carry the cap that covers where the GPS installs when you remove the GPS after arriving at your destination? It would be nice to have it attached within easy reach so you don't have to dig for it.

No, I have not just yet.  I have not had the fairing off either yet.  Have noticed that my headlight is aimed to the left quite a bit so it doesn't sit centered in the faring.  Never ceases to amaze me.  Either the factory isn't concerned about how things line up or dealerships are not concerned about how things line up when they do the setup they like to charge us extra for.  So, I have to take care of that before I put the fairing back on.  And can you believe it, I got the new bike sitting in my garage and the trade-in still sitting there while he was getting some paperwork.  I gave the bike a quick overlook and what did I discover??? The left rear footpeg was nothing more than a common rubber footpeg from a Heritage.  I thought, wt????  I brought that to his attention and he said, "that must have come from the factory that way".  Not!!!  so, he allowed me to swap out footpegs so at least I have all the stuff I'm supposed to have on the bike.  Ha!
Back on the subject of where am I going to mount the plug for the GPS???   I may just go with a piece of velcro inside of the saddlebag and put the plug/GPS unit inside a small, durable watertight bag and attach it to the side of the saddlebag out of vision.  I don't think there is room inside the "jockeybox" in the dash.  Think that is full of "fuse" if I remember correctly.  Have had a few back aches and pains since I got the bike and am sort of inching my way into knowing all about it.

That is one of my issues. The dealer installed the fairing with the cord on the opposite side as its mate and I cannot connect the two.
