2011: How to drain fuel?
« on: February 17, 2012, 06:56:06 AM »

I have to get the krypto ready for shipping back to the US.  I have to drain the fuel before the movers come.  What is the best way to do this?

you can remove the tank in about 5 minutes.........turn it upside down and drain into a bucket.

Any diagram on how to remove it?

There is a little screw at the front end of the dash and a bigger bolt at the tail of the dash beneath the seat.  Those two will release the dash.  Under the dash you'll unplug the wiring to the fuel pump and the fuel vent line.

That rear dash bolt is also the hold down bolt for the rear of the tank.  Two front bolts holding the tank to the bike's frame are found at the front of the tank.  Likely behind some small black covers that just pop off by hand (if they haven't already fallen off.

On the left side of the tank toward the rear is the fuel line that goes to the engine.  It disconnects from the tank.  The fitting on the tank is a quick coupler.  Raise the outer shell and the line will disconnect.

That's it.

Very very simple job..........Just heavy if full of fuel. Watch your belt buckle, watch band or rings when you lift off. Don't want to scratch that paint.

Doesn't he need to pull the fuel pump fuse and run it till it dies to release the fuel pressure before he can disconnect the fuel line? I am asking because I have not done mine yet and that is what the manual says?  Thanks Face

Such a suggestion may be in the manual.  I don't know if it is or not.  Having said that; I never do.  Often there's little to no pressure if it's set for awhile.  For those times there is I hold a rag around it for the moment of disconnection.  It's just a quick spritz.

Why not just drive it till it is almost dry and then idle it?  I would be a nice way to send it off.  I am sure it will be at least a month before the next ride.    :nixweiss:

Given the small volume used at idle that could make for a long time idling unless you brought it in on fumes.

An easier solution would be to visit a dealer and get a spare fuel line.  Cut off the end that attaches to the throttle body.  Connect a piece of cheap rubber line to the cut off end so it can easily reach a plastic gas can setting next to the bike  Connect your new home made drain line to the tank quick coupler.  Then turn on the switch and let the fuel pump pump the tank empty.

This method will work fine, as long as the switch gets turned off immediately when the pump starts sucking serious air.  The fuel is what lubricates and cools the pump, so I wouldn't suggest walking away to do something else while letting the pump run.  Doing so might mean buying a new pump in the near future.

A regular cheap plastic syphon, which can be found in any auto parts or Wally World type store, will also remove about the same amount of fuel.  I usually syphon out the excess fuel before removing the tank, just to avoid maybe dropping and damaging the tank.  Fuel is heavy, and when it's sloshing around it can make that tank a bit awkward to handle.

I've siphoned gas out of my old bikes for over 30 years.  Sometimes I even get the hose out before the gas rushes in my mouth.   :'(

Anyway to just use the quick disconnect at the bottom of the tank?

See Twolanerider's earlier post.  Just popping the fuel line loose won't allow the fuel to drain, you need to have a fitting and hose to install into the quick connect, then pump the fuel out.  Or buy a simple syphon.

How "dry" do they require the tank to be for shipping?  Cars are shipped all the time with small amounts of fuel in the tank, and actually removing 100% of the fuel is usually not required or even possible.  If you can syphon out enough to comply with the rules, that would be your best option by far.  No chance of damaging the tank, no need to rig up a fuel line to use the fuel pump to empty the tank, and the kind of syphon I'm talking about is dirt cheap as well.  Plastic line with a bulb and check valve, I think I paid less than $5 for the one I have.

Had to take off my tank a couple of weeks to run some wiring.  Much easier than on the earlier models.

Like stated before, before disconnecting the quick coupler you are supposed to remove the Fuel Pump fuse and then start the bike to get rid of any pressure in the line.  So that you do not get sprayed with gas when you uncouple the tank.

Overall an easy job.
