2006 FHLTCUSE searching for fuel
« on: February 19, 2012, 07:09:37 AM »

I have inported from USA a 2006 FLHTCUSE and I road it across OZ no problems. When I arrived back the bike started missing and seemed to be searching for fuel. Check the codes and none came up except B1004 Fuel Level sensor. This may be because when I imported the bike had to have new speedo installed to read Klms. Went to the local HD dealer here in Perth Western Australia and they told me to get lost as is an imported bike and their policy is they will not work on it. (We must have left hand drive bikes over here). Dealer 200 klms away had a look and they replaced the injectors and said a manifold seal was leaking. The 200 k ride back was great (After $1000) but as soon as I got back to city started same of tricks and is missing again. Same sensation as running out of fuel and then the engine get a bit more and off it goes. It does it under revs or idling. Can anyone help with where to do next. Have looked at all the wiring and cannot find an issue, dealer said fuel pressure was alright. Could it be fuel pump. Bike is as clean as no leaks anywhere will run like a dream and then all of a sudden start missing as if it is searching for fuel. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I am at a loss for advise but wish you the best of luck getting it resolved. I am at the mercy of the locals here at the dealership. I know there are people on this forum that will get you pointed in the right direction. Hope all ends well.

Think the dealer might have.....well never mind......

Put your ear to the tank.....listen for a hissing sound......fuel line inside tank has a hole in it

I agree it's probably the fuel line problem. Might follow up with the dealer to see which injectors they used. There was a problem with them on the 06 that caused some trouble. See the attached PDF. It was more related to starting and hesitation off idle. We had the Black Candy Crimson version and had excellent luck with it, after new injectors.  :2vrolijk_21:

:2vrolijk_21:    Very common problem, thanks to some of Harley's fine engineering.  The fuel line from the pickup to the pump in the tank rubs and develops a little hole.  When the fuel level in the tank drops low enough to expose the hole to air, you lose fuel pressure.  Do you notice that it runs well with a full tank but starts running poorly as the fuel is used?  That is a good indicator.

btw, any Harley dealer worth more than two dead flies should be very familiar with this.  $1000 for a couple injectors and intake seals (the intake may have been leaking, but the injectors were most likely fine) is nothing short of highway robbery, and then they compounded the theft by not fixing the problem.  And here I thought just USA Harley dealers were incompetent crooks.

I just went through the same thing with my 06 at 50k miles.  I could not get above 3600 rpm.

Yep, fuel line in the tank.  I replaced the fuel filter while I was in there.  One of the reasons I think I had the issue is a missing rubbler gromet//bumper on the bottom of the fuel pump.  This rubber bumper on the bottom of the fuel pump sits firmly against the tank, I assuem it helps keep things from moving & rubbing.

Mine was just rolling around in the tank so not doing it's job.  It looked like it was damaged on the original installation & fell off.  So, put in a new fuel filter & lines, (I did both lines to be safe) don't forget the ruber bumper & I bet you will be good.  Oh and make sure you have lots of money, HD thinks these lines are made out of gold.  Fuel Filter was like $79 and the lines were like $150.

fuel pressure and engine temp. sensor won't set codes and may or may not be the problem. you will have to find some one with a scaner and fuel pressure gauge. wait for the problem to act up and see what values are out of range
only then will you have a good point to start looking for a failed part, connector  or wear ever it leeds you.

Here is one other possibility to consider.  I had the same intermittent problem and chased what I thought were fuel related issues for over a year.  Never threw any codes either.  Eventually, I ran into a guy that previously had the same problem and turned out to be a bad Throttle Position Sensor.  I took a chance and replaced the TPS.  Done deal; all fixed.  It's about a $30.00 part (US) and easily replaced.  Just throwing it out there as another possibility.

I had a similar problem on a '05 WideGlide at 7,000 miles.  On '05 WG, you had a choice of carb or EFI, I chose EFI.  Same as others mentioned; fuel line in the tank had a hole rubbed in it.  No codes.  It would run fine at idle and small throttle openings, but at larger throttle openings, it was running out of fuel.   What confused the situation, it was running fine, then we tore it down to go from 88 to 95, S&S 585 gear drive cams, roller rocker arms, 10.5:1 CR, big heads, etc.  Put it back together with a map that should've been close enough to break it in for a few miles, then we'd put it on the dyno.  First ride, I was impressed to 3,000 to 3,500, then it'd fall flat.  I kept thinking map was way off.  Took it to the dealer, they turned the ignition on, waited for the fuel pump to pressure up and shut off, then just waited instead of starting it.  Within 10-15 seconds, the fuel pump kicked on again, then off, then on, etc.  Before they ever opened up the tank, they said "bad fuel pump".  I said "fine, fix it, its still under warranty".  They pulled the pump out, line had a very small hole in it, pump was fine.  Bike now has 46K miles on it, no problems since.

Good luck, I hope you figure it out!

Thanks all for your input. I will start with the fuel line and also look at some sensors. Hopefully I can trace the problem and fix it.

I had the same thing on my Deuce let the tank get low and take off the gas cap turn on ignition and hit the run button fuel pump should whirr and stop when it reaches pressure if there is a hole it will keep running... strange thing with mine was it had been doing this for about 2 years before i replaced the hose and I had ridden10000 miles including 3600 miles to Sturgis and back without a major problem except the hissing noise from the tank and a little hesitation when it was cold it would leave my buddies 07 Street glide in a drag race..

Does the bike have an aftermarket fuel controller?  Power Commander etc?

I had a power commander the exact same thing to me, but it was only on real hot days.  Replaced it and never had the problem again.  Just a thought.
