Confused about the air filter on the 06....
« on: July 15, 2006, 12:39:31 AM »

I looked in the airfilter and see it is blue.   Is that the K & N HD0800 airfilter in there?   Or is that the factory POS?

My guess is it's the MoCo's filter.

It is a MoCo filter.  At some point they switched over from a blue backed filter to a black one.  My bike was built in Jan 2006 and came with the black backed filter.

I think the K&N is a good investment.  I am not convinced there will be any performance advantage.  I am going to keep a close eye on my stock filter for now.  When it comes time to replace or I see any wearing I'll go with the K&N.

Why not go with the Zippers filter? Its just like the K&N and cheaper, just mention your a memnber of the CVO site and you'll get a discount.

Zippers also has a modified filter that is deeper flowing even more cfm, if you dont have a problem with the air filter sticking out a little farther I think thats the way to go. When I talked to them they said just by putting the modified filter on a stock 06 CVO they saw a 5hp increase with no mapping changes, showing these filters are choking out the motor. I have had two stock blue filters on mine and both elements started disinigrating. I'm using the deeper filter.

I purchased the K&N filter (HD800) a while back and installed it in my bike.  The blue air filter looked fine from the outside but had failed pretty severely inside.  Very lucky it didn't go through the engine.
Here is the other thread on it

The blue rubber can deteriorate when oil carryover soaks the rubber. My advice , run it until it craps out. No need for the K&N now. The OEM filters trap more dirt anyway.
