We don't know for sure, but I'd be surprised if the guy was going very fast at the point the bike's rear tire gets leveraged off the ground....for one, the bike never slides accross the center line, plus neither of the two slide very far.

It's not a place where you want to scrimp on having the right gear on, just in case.

Basically, they were very fortunate.  If a bike or car had been coming the other direction the lady might be in worse shape.

For those of us who have ridden the Dragon several times, we know that it is like two different rides, depending on which direction one is traveling...heading towards Deal's Gap is what I consider to be going "uphill" most of the way, which presents it's own set of challenges.  Going "downhill", or back towards the lookout point and the Lake, is a very different ride, IMO.  I prefer the uphill version.  Basically, the Dragon is not a place to push your, or your bike's, ability to the ragged edge of control.  Neither do you want to poke through it either...finding a nice medium/medium fast cadence where you can get some sort of rhythm going is the ticket through.  Going off the side of the road is a very bad thing, as you and the bike will be taking a rather unpleasant ride either thru the air, or into some trees down the side of the mountain.

I used to backpack in the area a lot back in the mid to late 70's and early 80's, and have traveled the road a bunch of times in a cage.  Back then, the speed limit was 55mph, if you can believe it.  Of course, it was impossible to actually GO 55mph in anything I was driving back then (old VW Bugs and old pickup trucks), but that was the speed limit posted.  Deals Gap was just an old raggedy country gas station, and not even open a lot of the time, especially in Winter.  My, how things have changed...

Even in July, this is the least amount of clothing I'll wear through there...

I guess if you have never done the Dragon or the Snake, you have to experience it at least once.  Foolishly, I have experienced it 4 times and I'm not sure why?  I ride a touring bike :nixweiss: it's not designed to ride those types of roads, plus it's a lot of friking work manuevering 958lbs of motorcycle and my fat ass through those turns.  I choose the nice sweeping turns where you can relax and enjoy the ride as you glance around at the scenery versus working your tail off and taking unnecessary risk....just thinkin outloud?

Yes dirt counts! I first enterend on a dirt bike but in 2001 I broad sided a car on my fxr and took the big leap! No helmet! Got a hole in the back of my head now! knocked me out and the mirrors skined my leg and feet. Back was brused and sore. I was lucky!!!! FACE

The Cherohala Skyway is a much nicer ride, IMO...either direction.

It sure as heck is.  I've said many times it is like doing the MSF/ERC or Mark's (Ironhorse) Ride-Like-A-Pro for 11 miles, lol.  Have ridden the Dragon and the Snake a few times and glad I had the experience.  But for a fun ride I can think of many more I prefer - like you said where you can enjoy the ride and maybe see some scenery.  Take you eyes off the road on the Dragon and it'll bite you.

The Dragon is a special "destination" road is nice to experience but you have to realize you are one one of the most dangerous roads in the country. It is possible to ride this road safely if you are an experienced rider and you stay on full alert. My BSR is my 17y/o daughter and I assure you I care for her as much as myself but she rarely wears gloves. :nervous:

I have never seen a big rig on the road and hope never to meet one. Personally I would like to see the bikers at the top pull his stupid a-- out of the cab and beat the crap out of him, he deserves it. If you make a living driving and can't do any better than that you deserve rough treatment.

We have roads much more challenging than that one in the east TN area but they have much fewer people on them.

I ride a touring bike :nixweiss: it's not designed to ride those types of roads,

I guess the blue ones are different from the red ones. Mine was designed to take me anywhere I wanted to go.

 :nervous:  :nixweiss:  :nervous: :nixweiss:

plus it's a lot of friking work manuevering 958lbs of motorcycle and my fat ass through those turns.

No wonder the red ones are slower, they weigh 958 lbs.
Was wondering why.
Thanks for answering that question.

I just can't believe they let 18 wheelers go through there. There should be signs or postings.
