Clutch Diaphram Spring Pressure
« on: February 22, 2012, 09:40:14 AM »

Hello,

I have my primary apart on my 2007 Ultra Classic Screaming Eagle to do some housekeeping work.

While under the cover I was interested in installing the SE clutch spring. I have tried to find out the pressure on my stock spring just to make sure I wasn't going lighter on spring pressure. I thought the SE spring would be stronger. Some folks on the forums say that the CVO bikes already have the SE spring, but I don't believe so.

Anyway I purchased the SE spring and placed them side by side. The spring thickness appears the same. I have not verified that with a micrometer as of yet. What I did notice is that there is a lot less spring material present. Note how much furher the spring notches are cut away between the fingers of the spring. The SE spring is on top of the stock spring in the photo. Stock spring has the pink square and white dot.

I know this is not a valid method for testing, but when placed on a table and depressing a finger or two on the clutch springs the SE springs appears much weaker than my stock spring.

Any thoughts or ideas?   :orange:

The clutch spring that comes with the '07 thru '11 CVO clutches is in fact a stronger spring than what comes on the stock TC96 bikes or the Limited TC103 bikes.  The spring is part number 37807-03 and is color coded pink.

Where did you get the SE spring, and what is the part number?  There are listings for SE clutch springs that are for earlier model bikes, and while they might be stronger than the stock springs in a late model EVO or early TC88, they are unlikely to be stronger than the springs in the CVO110's.  I would think the dealers catalog would list the actual spring rates, but maybe not.

I think your observation is dead on concerning the comparison of the two springs.  Your stock spring has more metal and less void, thus it is stiffer.

Thanks Jerry,

The SE spring is part number 37951-98.  I just purchased it new and removed it from the sealed pouch.  I was hoping to get a slightly stronger spring and it is hard to do since I can't fine the pressure on the CVO/110 stocker.  Another waste of $30.00!

The part number 37807-03 that you states is what is listed in my FLHTCUSE2 parts book.  Still can't find pressure rating on it though.

Anyone?
