Lincoln Hwy. aka US Hwy. 40 was the first transcontinental highway. Originally a gravel highway or what was known back then as the "rock highway". It was completed in 1928 and paralled much of I-80, at least through Nevada and California.

Just to comment a bit on the Lincoln Highway, it is considered to be the first transcontinental auto route. BUT, most of the route is represented by today's US-30. It's a very interesting story if you're interested.
