Starter Motor, Cant get the end cap back on.
« on: February 26, 2012, 08:21:30 PM »

I'm a little embarrassed to have to ask but I've never had a starter apart before, so I'm treading new ground. I removed the long skinny bolts/screws that hold the starter end on,  and while fumbling with a bracket and the tight space the end came too far off the starter and now I cant get it back on.  Based on what I'm reading, I fear that the brush springs have collapsed and are keeping them from sliding over the starter shaft???  Is that right?  what do I need to do to get the end to slide back up enough to put the long screws back in?

BTW,  I was attempting to put the chrome starter cover on.   http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=66877.0

Unless you moved the end frame of the starter and the brush holder housing outboard with the end cap the brushes shouldn't have come off the armature.  If you did, however, you're correct.  The brushes will have to be reloaded in the holder (there are some springs in there too) then slid back over the armature.

Hang on a sec.  Will go find the exploded view.  That'll help more than any description of brush holders and springs and armatures.  Be right back.....

Ok, got it.  See if this is at all helpful.

I saw this drawing TwoLane,  The parts 18 & 17 have slide back and I cant get them back on the piece between the #27 orings.  Looks like I've made a real mess of this little job....   shucks!
Thank  you for the reply

Nuts....   Sorry about that.  That's an oh-chit-moment I've not done (yet) with the newer starter.  So can't speak first hand to having the necessary room to reload the brushes through the end of the end cap.  Just got off the phone with a buddy whom I called before posting back at you again here.  He says it can be done though.  A bit tedious.  Work with the end of a ground down igition screwdriver or large paper clip.  Something like that.  And the brushes can be raised enough that the armature can be slid back home.

Sorry I can't offer that with any first hand assurance.  But was just told it can be done.  Good luck :2vrolijk_21: .

if that's your '09 the starter will come out without the outer primary being removed.

Why not simply remove the starter to do the reassembly then put it back in?.... its only 2 bolts asnd the wires.

Man!  that was a pain in the rear.  Used the procedure in the manual utilizing the paper clips to hold the brushes back so it could slide over the armature, but there was no way I could have done it with the starter on the bike.  Looks like I've honed my skills of blazing the trail on how NOT to do a job.  Hard to beat experience....  :2vrolijk_21:

Don't feel bad.  I've done quite a bit of work on my bikes and I learned something here I didn't know.  That you can remove the starter on an 09 without removing the outer primary.  That's good info to know!
Just remember:   Experience is something you get right after you needed it!     I've sure made a few mistakes in my lifetime but you sure remember from the best ones!
