My Toy Hauler, packed for camping, and two bikes is pretty close to 8,000 pounds. My 07 GMC Denali with the 6 ltr gas engine pulls it, but I am often at the outer limits of power and braking. I am thinking about a new Denali or Chev LTZ 2500 with a Duramax 6.6 and the Allison trans. Does anyone have experience with a similar truck. I can't find much on fuel mileage. I have talked to a couple of guys who claim 15-20 mpg whether towing or not. I get 11 around town and 14 on the highway with my gas engine, but 6-8 when towing.
Any first hand experience would be appreciated. These are real expensive.

I have an 06 Sliverado 2500 with the Duramax in it with 375,000 kms on it. I used to  tow a lot of heavier equipment with it . No issues. Mileage is about 26 empty and about 20 hauling. A friend of mine has a 2010 Ford  F350 Diesel. Pulling the same loads he is about 4 mpg less, empty or full. I did hear that the new Duramax's aren't as easy on fuel. Don't pull much anymore and just took delivery of a new  F 150. Still have the Silverado as a tow vehicle  when needed. Just remember, this is mpg is based on the larger Canadian gallon.

I drive a 2011 Denali 2500 HD with the Duramax. I average 24 mpg on highway, 18 mpg in town and 12 mpg pulling a 37' toyhauler. The truck is much stronger and better fuel milage than the 2008 duramax I had before. Plus with the new truck you get a larger tank and exhaust brake. Love this truck.

I have an 08 Silverado with the Duramax and Allison transmission. Only truck I've ever owned that I absolutely love. Most trucks I trade off with 50,000 miles. 65,000 or so now, and I don't want to trade it off. It'll get 15-16 empty, 10-11 loaded. I've pulled enclosed motorcycles no problem. I've got a 20' flat bed trailer I've pulled with 10,000 pounds of steel counterweight on. Can't say I can't tell it's back there, of course I can. But, couldn't ask for anything any better that doubles as simply personal transportation.

I don't baby my vehicles. Scratched up and dirty as hell. If limbs are hangin in my way, I drive through them. In other words I use it.

If you go with a diesel engine, don't settle for 2 WD. You'd get stuck on a cow turd.

If I remember, The Imperial gallon is about 20% more. So 80% of your numbers is still 20 mpg. (assuming miles not kms). Diesel is only 10% more expensive than gas, so to go from under 10 mpg to near 20 mpg while towing would be cool. Plus the new truck holds 33 gallons of fuel vrs 25 gallons of gas on the old one.
233,000 miles. Wow. Could be my last truck.

My 06 never got numbers like that.

18K toy hauler (lot of wind to push) - My 06 Dmax with intake, tuner, exhaust etc. 1.5-12 12 MPG if I kept it around 52-53. dropped to 9 at 62-65.

The fact you could tow 18K with it is impressive. As I understand it the 2011 and 2012 with the urea additive are 15-20% more effecient and have more power.

The fact I could tow 18K with my 2500 Dmax didn't make it OK.

I now have a 2011 F-350 DRW. And the mileage is about 1 mpg less.

Another dually report so not the same. 2005 Chev dually LLY Duramax with Banks air kit/programmer and exhaust and the one time I actually weighed the setup it ran at 25,700lbs. That was truck and 38' 5th wheel full of my crap and got 10-11 mpg at 55-60 through rolling hills between Elko, NV and Pocatello, ID. Pulling a 48' Featherlite puts me me in the 9-11 range on the freeway at 70-75 if the head winds aren't kicking up. The Featherlite has a pretty decent tappered nose on the front and actually pulls easier than the 24' Pace American Shadow I have.

I used to have a diesel Excursion back when they had the big engine.  It would get 14-15 mpg on the highway if I was towing or not.  I would be towing a two bike enclosed trailer from TN to Michigan and back.

My gas Suburban on the other hand is a much different story towing on the road.

Yea, both my older F350's with gas 460CI get about 6-8 MPG @ 55MPH when towing our loaded 26' toy hauler at 11K lbs..  Gotta go Diesel, we can't afford to tow anymore

 I have friends that have older smokers, and they get good mileage 12/16 pulling a trailer.
 The guys with the 09/11's say your lucky to get 9/10 pulling anything over 8k. Now these
 are guys that pull 25/30 ft trailers, 5th wheels, etc. Had I guy with a GMC follow us to Sturgis,
 and as soon as he went over 65, he got 7/9 mpg with the headwind!

I went with the 2006 Dodge 2500 Mega Cab.  Totally because of the Cummins diesel engine; without a doubt, hands-down, the best diesel engine offered in a consumer pickup.  I pull a 37' Toyhauler that comes in loaded with the Ultra on board at about 13K lbs.  I get 20-22 mpg on the highway at 75 mph, and about 13-16 mpg in town; unladen.  Towing I get 11 mpg regardless if it's uphill, down hill with a tail wind, or on flat highway, cruising at around 70mph.  Love my 2500!!!
