Pretty intense around Huntsville today.  One area just north of town got zapped again just 10 months after the April '11 outbreak.  Air was soppy wet, temps in the 80s. Drive thru a thunderstorm for 1/2 mile then totally dry then another thunderstorm. Thankfully no one died today.

Branson, MO 100 miles SE of here (Joplin) got nailed a few days ago as part of a larger group of bad storms.  Storms that were were far north from normal for February.  Then this outbreak in the last 36 hours on the heels of the prior mess.  I didn't think I was spooked by our storm here last May but I find I am not at all looking forward to the active weather season this year.  May have to pal up with a buddy who's a chaser again to get close and get the yips out of my system.

We have (had) a condo at Kimberling City that got nailed by the one that hit Branson.

Sorry DJ.  Really am man.  My friends in the area all did mostly ok.  One's business lost a roof another lost a boat (literally).  But no one with even a scratch.  And like the rest of us would be there all already cleaning up and moving on.  Hey, their busy season is coming.  It's what they do.

Thanks Don.  The complex where our condo is has 3 levels (stories).  The roof got ripped off the upper level and pretty much destroyed all the third level condos.  Ours is on the second level and we have been scrambling to try to salvage contents before it rains again.  We just recently had put in new carpets.  But at least no one got hurt badly in the complex.

The day the storms ran through the Branson area my niece got the yips again big time.  The Hilton that got a fair amount of damage in both its Convention Center and lodging area is the site of a cheerleading competition she's in a couple times a year.  So her little barely nine year old mind was envisioning all the damage in places she had exactly been just three weeks before.  And that took her back to last year's storm here.  It was a rough day for her.

She's a bright kid though.  With good analytical and coping skills.  So we found KY3's footage and other pics online and actually looked at all of it.  Let her digest it better, actually see it and work through a good 90 minutes of discussion and questions she had.  Then she had it behind her.  Good kid.  Even though she was home sick from school that day she still wanted to "go down and help like all the people did here."

Your niece sounds like a special kid Don.  Bet you wouldn't trade her even for 2 speckled pups would ya.  Is the Hilton down at the Branson Landing?  If it is I think I saw some pictures of it somewhere with curtains flapping in the breeze all over the building.

Yes, down at The Landing.  Large windows on the convention center that face the landing and the river all blown in with lots of damage.  She saw pics of shards and debris in places she had specifically been and where the team had practiced.  Then across the street more pics of windows out in the residential rooms facing the courtyard where she's also specifically been.  After digesting it all a bit she ended it all with "darn glad we aren't competing there today!"

More pics showed damage in the several blocks up old main street in the Landing just above the Hilton and the river.  That's all too damn bad too.  I actually much prefer hanging around down there and on the landing than I do anything up on the strip other than taking the kid to White Water.

Just gearing up for the season and with all the ongoing refurb construction that's part of the scene down there it seems safe to trust they will repair quickly.  Good luck on getting yours straightened out and cleaned up quickly also DJ.

Man I'll tell ya, between the floods and the tornados the Landing has had a hell of a time of it the last few years.  Remember when that was Sammy Lane Resort.  That was pretty cool to me when I was a young'un.

I do.  And walking up to the old ice cream shop there on Main that's been there forever.  Since back before Branson was the Branson we think of now.  I can remember fishing with my dad and uncle where most of The Landing is now and looking up at "the fancy restaurant" on the hill.  The restaurant is still there.  Just doesn't look quite as fancy anymore.

Yeah they had the pirate boat that was pretty cool too.  I remember being in a boat trout fishing and the pirate ship coming by and harassing us with all the "civilians" on board.  I remember when I was a kid, after going thru a much smaller than now Branson proper on our way to Silver Dollar City there was nothing but trees and hills for what seemed like many miles between Branson and SDC.

I'm lucky to have in a real way rediscovered playing in and around Branson the last few years.  Especially when the only way through town was 76 the traffic was so bad I came to hate the place 20 years or so ago.  Gave up even getting close.  Had a place on Table Rock over by Golden and would always come up on Silver Dollar City from the back side and never go on in town.  It was (and still can be) just such a hassle.

Then about five years ago the niece "discovered" White Water and Silver Dollar City and all the cheesy crap on the strip.  We have a blast going down there now.  See it through her eyes rather than mine and it makes all the difference.  All the things that were just a nuisance and weren't worth the trouble became only part of the adventure.

Yeah, kids have a way of influencing one's perspective on many things.  They're so damn innocent.   :huepfenlol2:  They have greatly reduced the traffic pressure on 76 with the construction of northern and southern loops bypassing around the strip.  When I was taking my kids there in the early to mid 90's it was a bitch no matter whose eyes I tried to see it through.  I've even enjoyed some of the shows I've seen there.  The Liverpool Legends was fun.
