EXHAUST SYSTEM, FILTER, & RACE TUNER - WARRANTY
« on: July 17, 2006, 02:40:26 PM »

All it took was a 130 mile ride home from the dealership to realize that the '06 CUSE wasn't all that I had hoped it would be.  I had owned an '04 Ultra with 95 cu. in. Big Bore Stage II, Cams, and SE mufflers and I think that it had more power and torque than this '06 with the 103 cu. in.  I had purchased the extended warranty, so I thought that I'd just learn to like the new bike.  It ain't working.

I'd like to stay out of the engine just because of the warranty issues, but I've had dealers tell me that there are no substitues for the factory 4" mufflers that won't violate the warranty.  Over the weekend, my local preferred dealer told me that I could go with an exhaust system, go to a K & N filter element, and put in the Harley race tuner and I'd be OK on the warranty (as far as they are concerned).

The dealer tells me that 2 into 1 will make more power and torque.  He told me about D & D 2 into 2 with a ghost left pipe to give that balance look on the bike.  I've never heard of D & D, but I like the idea of having the left pipe.

I'd like to start some discussion regarding exhaust system options, the K & N filter, and the race tuner.  I'd also like to know what folks have experienced regarding this warranty issue.

Did you have warranty issues with your '04?  That Stage II bb kit is not street legal and can void your warranty just as well as what you're concerned about on your '06.  Had same setup on my '99 and never had any warranty problem and I had cam chain tensioners replaced under extended warrant at 65k.  Was not an issue.

Like you I felt stock just wasn't gettin' it done and added slip-ons, filter and SERT to my CUSE.  Runs way better now.

AutHazBlk06,

The D&D FatCat 2 into 1 pipe has been installed by several folks on SEEG's, and I don't remember anyone having anything other than good things to say about them, performance / fit / quality appearance.  You may want to try the search feature and go back a full year.

As for the warranty thing, assuming you're talking about a mechanical failure under the regular warranty and not something under the emissions warranty, the only way H-D or a dealer can void your warranty is if they can prove that your modification was the direct cause of the failure.  For example, say your cam chain tensioners failed.  There is no way that a different exhaust system could possibly cause a tensioner failure, therefore the non-stock exhaust would not be a valid reason to void the warranty.  You have protection in these matters under the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act (federal law). The smart thing to do, just to avoid having to fight with them if you have a problem, is to save all the parts you remove.  If your engine blows up, put the stock parts back on and then take the bike to the dealer.

Life is too short to worry about the BS various dealers try to throw at us - it's your bike, do what you want and enjoy it!

My SEEG Dyno numbers with the D&D Fatcat pipes and tuning done by a very good tuner.
