handle bar change
« on: March 07, 2012, 11:05:37 AM »

I have a 2003 FLHRSEI2. Don't like the wide beach bars that come on this bike. Would like more of a regular style Road King bar, like a buck horn style. My question...is there a particular bar made where i won't have to swap out all the cables for ones of a different length? These bars are 1/14" which I can't find any listed from Harley. Any info would be appreciated.

No "particular" bar it's just a case of overall length.  There will be many options that don't require new cables.  And many that do.

As but one example I've got the Wild1 "mini apes" on my Road King.  The name notwithstanding they don't look like like ape hangers.  I don't really care for tall apes.  These bars look good, feel fine, good wrist angle and didn't require longer cables than stock.

If the Harley bar is 1.25" even at the riser mounts you'll have another change to make when swapping the bars.  Most bars (even 1.25" aftermarket bars) are only the standard 1" at the riser mounts.  So you'll be changing the risers also.  To use the more common 1" risers.  That's not a big deal.  They aren't even very expensive.  Plus it's a great opportunity to change the old riser bushings while you're doing it.  Be sure and use a one piece top clamp when you put it all back together.  Makes for a stronger mount.

Here's a pic of a Road King with the 1.25" Wild1 "mini apes" mentioned above.

Thanks Twolane. BTY..nice bike. I guess my next question would be, we're you just lucky that the cables fit or did you know that before ordering? Is there some way of knowing what length you might need before ordering new bars. Thanks.

Can't always know.  In my case the bars I chose had been used by others so had their experience to go by.

The aftermarket vendors will usually have some idea.  But they can't always be specific.  When you ask them will it work with "stock cables" replacing "stock bars" they can rightfully say what is stock varies from model to model.  They often could be more specific than they do.  But it's a crap shoot for them so I can't say I blame them.

If you like the Wild1 bars (any of their models) call or PM site member hd-dude.  He's a shop owner and a vendor of their products.  Lots of experience.  He'll be a good source for what will work with what parts in combination.
