Air filter cover fitment question.
« on: March 07, 2012, 04:44:46 PM »

As I sit here waiting for my 52mm S&S throttle body (as well as auto tune VFI module and autotune kit to replace my marelli system) to get here I am pondering a question. What will I need to mount my stock air filter cover back to my bike? I know the stock setup won't fit, and now I am told a Delphi setup won't fit either. Anyone know the scoop? I want to keep the bike looking right! (The same reason I am spending a fortune on this 106 build instead of blowing a marginaly larger sum for a S&S T111 engine new...)

I just went with a 58mm throttle body from the stock 50mm and my builder milled the opening on the stock intake to match the opening size on the new TB.  It can be done.

His original Marelli throttle body and its air cleaner are entirely different beasts.  Not just a smaller round hole.  The hole isn't even round.  The Marelli T/B's were a dual throat unit with a rectangular face.

My bad.... I should have read his original post a little closer.

What about modifying your stock backing plate, and still use the filter and front cover?  Mill an over-sized hole into your stock backing plate and attach a piece of a piece of .090 or .120 aluminum to your backing plate.  Mill the correct size opening into the aluminum plate. May have to do a little re-engineering to secure it.

I haven't done this exact mod, but I've made a lot of brackets using .090 & .120 aluminum, with minimum garage tools, while working on street rods, 55-57 Chevy's, Cobra replica, etc.

Good luck!!

It is starting to sound like fabrication will be the order of the day. I was hoping for a bolt on fix!

Does S&S not offer an air cleaner kit that mates to their throttle body (seems unlikely)?  Or do they just not offer an air cleaner that would allow to keep using the stock cover?

The S&S mpunt used three screws around the perimeter instead of one big screw on the middle. May need to weld a piece onto the S&S unit and drill a hole in it. I just hate to mickey mouse...

That's the old standard S&S mount that's been around for many many years.  At least they're consistent.  That's the kind of issue you hate discovering only after you're in to a project so d$$p.

What? You mean there may be others who have felt and understand my "ballooning project cost" financial pain?  ;)
