Abbreviated Ride in Alabama
« on: March 11, 2012, 11:21:31 AM »

The wife visited some friends down in Selma, Alabama on last Wednesday, and since we now only have one cage, I was forced to ride the bike to go anywhere.  So, I decided to ride up to Rod's Performance and let him take a look at the Fullsac map in my bike on his Dyno.  Traveled up old Hwy 31N for the most part.  It has been a long time since I rode through the old parts of North Birmingham, and it turns out I haven't been missing anything.  Once a thriving part of town (back in the 50's and 60's), a lot of the business' are now abandoned buildings and places you don't want to travel through at night.  It's about a 50 mile run up to Hanceville, Alabama, where Rod's shop is located.  Hanceville is a small town of maybe 2K people, at most.

So, first pic is of the bike warming up in the driveway, with two of my dogs checking out what I'm doing...

Matrix is the Blk/White Border Collie mix.  I rescued him after he was put out at the Toyota Dealership I went to on a daily basis back in '08-'09 to be tortured by the management.  I think he has some Golden Retriever in him (soft mouth), or some other kind of bird dog, as he is too laid back to have much Border Collie in him.  At any rate, he hung with me all day one HOT Saturday on the dealer's lot, and I just couldn't bring myself to leave him there that night.  He got a clean bill of health from the Vet, so has now got a good home.  The other two are Australian Terriers...bred to be indoor/outdoor dogs on Aussie Farms to keep the place rid of rats, snakes and other small critters.  Tango is the female, and Rider (aka Midnight Rider) is the male...they are littermates, so are inseperable.  Fearless and 14-18lbs (female/male)  The hair is not soft...a bit "hard" to the touch, especially so on Rider, the male.  Powerful jaws and necks...they shake their prey to death.  I don't have many Chipmunks left in the fenced in part of my backyard any longer...they have dug them out of the ground for tastey treats.

They're saying "Bye" to their Dad...Judi's three Bishon Friese decided not to see me off.

A pic of the Cahaba River, about 2 miles from my house.  Nice little river to canoe, and home to several endangered species, including the Cahaba Lilly.  The river is the longest free flowing river in the state, before emptying into the much larger Alabama River below Selma, AL.  Development along the river (subdivisioins, mostly) has caused some siltation of the river, and the Cahaba Lilly will only grow on rocky bottoms.  Steps have been taken to ensure further harm will not happen.

It's a good road...some sweepers and twisty sections here and there, but mostly just traveling through the woods of Alabama...

Locust Fork...this river is good for canoeing/fishing, with mostly Class I and II, though there is a section that has Class III, and they hold Canoe/Kayak "races" there each year in late Spring.  The local Birmingham Canoe Club owns a section of property on the river where the Class III's are, so everybody goes out just to have a good tiime.  The locals don't really appreciate "all them hippies" hangin' out on the river...
