2006 SE Ultra Fuel Pump Torque
« on: March 12, 2012, 10:01:27 AM »

So I got my bike out and found that the seal under the tank dash has been leaking and the clear coat was eaten up. I'll attach a picture of it and of the bad seal. From all that I have spoke with the culprit is believed to be the guy who installed the tank at the factory. It appears the seal was ripped and even at 5000 miles there is not a warranty on this. I have sent a letter to Harley Davidson to see if they are willing to assist in any way. The quotes show I could be in $800 to get the tank repaired.

So my question, I have bought a new seal and am currently checking to see if anyone can verify that the correct torque on the screws that attach the fuel pump to the tank is 13 pounds per inch per bolt? According to all that I have read this is correct, but I didn't know if anyone here could verify that for me. Thanks again.

Is this for the 2000 Road King you described in your first post?

I had a 2000 Road King Classic. I had it punched out, Andrews gear driven cams, the heads milled and larger intakes put in.

The canopy self sealing screws on my bike call for 18 to 24 inch-pounds, if you're talking about an E'glide.

No, this is for my 2006 Screamin' Eagle Ultra
It gets screwed to the tank, on top of the gasket.
I believe it is the fuel pump that mounts to it.

Yup, it's called the canopy.  The fuel pump and fuel gauge sending unit is attached to it, and the seal you showed goes between the actual fuel tank and the canopy.  You need to use brand new sealing screws along with the new gasket, and the torque on the ten screws is 18-24 inch-pounds.  There is also a sequence to follow when tightening the screws.

                          1

           7                              9

         3                                   6

         5                                   4

           10                             8

                           2

Jerry, Thanks so much. I'll be making another trip to the dealership to pick up some new screws.
I bought the new gasket. Thanks also for the sequence. I'm hoping I never have this problem again.
Do you silicone it as well or leave it without?

Just clean the surfaces, no silicone or other foreign substances.

Thanks again Jerry.
Hopefully the tank is back from the painters next week and I can get it all put back together
and be out on my scooter enjoying this weather.

Makes me wonder about your dealer. The screws get replaced every time, and he should have told you that.

In defense of my local dealer, I stopped at a dealership on the way to take my son to his Doctor's appointment.
That dealership is not my local and the lady working the counter didn't have a clue what I was talking about. I had
to look at the screen and show her where the gasket went and then tell her what I needed.

When we do our own service the responsibility is ours to know what we need.  If that means forcing ourselves to read the pertinent sections of a service manual before doing the work or asking someone who has been there before if we do the job it's on us.  It's great if the parts guy knows enough to be helpful.  But he/she is the parts guy not the servicer.

Sorry you had the problem.  Hopefully it's not too ugly and will be hidden by the dash?

Here is the before... I'm still waiting on the painter to call and say he is done painting.
