Tire Pressure
« on: March 13, 2012, 08:21:39 PM »

Just thought I would check the tire pressure after a 30 mile trip. The pressure went up 7 psi in both front and rear. They had correct pressure when cold.

Charles's law will explain it.

Air pressure will go up as you heat the air.  That is why they say inflate to xx when cold.

Ever notice a top fuel cars back tires get taller during the launch?  Air expands during the burning rubber.

And I always thought it was centrifugal force.

And all this time I thought it was that they were flat so didn't wear a bra to hold them up :nixweiss: ?

Maybe they are just "excited" to get to the end of the track??

You are correct with respect to the drag car tires, it is the centrifugal force.

I guess I wrongly applied Charles's law.

I have had three rim and tire makers tell me when going to the 21 on my bike I had to take into account tire expansion due to heat for front fender placement.

I didn't know it was nitrogen versus air.  Nitrogen is the largest component of air.

Nitrogen is introduced dry and is more stable to pressure changes due to temperature variations, and because of the lack of an oxidizer ( O2 ), is less prone to accelerate deterioration of the rubber. ( internal dry rot )

Like anybody keeps tires on their bike long enough for them to rot!   :beatdeadhorse:
