Advice needed
« on: March 14, 2012, 02:16:45 PM »

My Krypto has been in for tuning to local independent, comes highly recommended by other 110 owners who have had similar issues with heat & were really pleased with the results, really nice guy who really knows what he is talking about & very passionate about what he does.

No problems with tuning, he called me today & said there could be an issue with my motor & he thinks the top end is a bit rattly but not to panic, suggests I take it in to dealer & get them to check it, but says from experience they will just say it is ok, however he says by me doing this with the dealer it will be logged & if I do have any major issues i will be covered ! Spoke to the dealer on the phone & although they sounded a bit surprised at first, suggested I wait until it goes in for 5K mile service, which isn't for another 1200 miles, so they don't seem to be to bothered by it.

Anyone had similar issues ? Also what are the implications of a rattly top end ? Or am I being a bit paranoid now ?

Cheers, Paul.

If your indy suggested that you take it in......I'd take it in.  Then let the dealership tell you "it's nothing......they all do that".  That way you have it documented!  Right now it's merely a verbal conversation that you had over the phone and no proof.

By the way, I haven't noticed it on mine but some here have said they have a very noisy top end.  I'm not sure if any of them have actually resulted in failure in the heads/valve train.

As JC said, I'd take it in and let them write up a service request on the bike so it's logged into the system.  I'm 98% certain they will tell you "it's normal", but there are exceptions on occasion.  Mine makes some noise, but IMO, it really is normal.  If the noises CHANGE then that's a different story.

Think I'll do just that, will ride it in tomorrow after I collect it, have a very good relationship with the dealership (or did up until today) & unfortunately the workshop manager who I know quite well was not there today, but did ask them to update him tomorrow ! Will let you know how I get on, cheers.

Local dealer told a client of our's, the "normal" words as well.
"They all sound like that, and the fairing is pulling the noise up to you."
Lifter roller had destroyed the rear cam.
Now do not think, that I saying that is your issue, but it would be a real good area to have investigated.

RTF....Ride to failure....that's what the local dealer told me when he heard the racket my bike was making. Rode it back to the house and didn't fire it up again till I tore into it myself, upgraded the known weak areas in the cam cavity, changed cam and lifters, upped the compression and got it tuned today. 100.19 HP/109.87 Max Torque.  Peace of mind and a much quieter motor.

Oh...and Hilliside found a bent exhaust valve when they did my heads.  They thing it was bent when it left the factory.

I'll ride mine 'till it breaks.  I've done pipes and a TTS, and that's all.  I can undo the TTS in 15 minutes, if given the chance.  I'm not going into the 110" motor...part of that will be on HD's dime, or the ESP.

I remember very well when in 2010 we were on the road to Superrally in Greece and just on the last 500 m to the ferry in Venice my bike went into limp mode - if it had been anything serious that would have been a ruined 3 weeks holiday as there is virtually no reliable dealer between Venice and Istambul.

I would rather have any suspected problem adressed as soon as possible than risking any part to blow when I don't need it and can't help it  ;)

Saw one earlier this year, in a fellow forum members 103"er.

After visiting dealership today they have listened to the bike & agree there is a problem that needs sorting, turns out in 2009/2010 Harley were having problems with cam lifters in the 110 motors, newer models were upgraded to rectify this problem, but guess what ? apparentley some of the newer models were fitted with the older lifters that they new had a problem ! After checking with moco my CVO is one of those that does not have upgraded lifters, parts ordered under warranty & bike will go in to have new lifters fitted, interesting to see what else they find when opened up !

It's a no brainier to me, if they know these parts have problems, why install them in the first place ? This is a £27K motorbike after all !

Have to say though, can't fault the dealership, great service as usual. Just glad it went to Indy for tuning as this may have been missed.

Cheers for all the input on this from you guys, Paul.

As soon as I get info I will post it up, part # etc. but in the dark at moment, just going on what I've been told at the dealership. Can't understand the mentality behind this, if the moco know there are 110s out there with this potential problem why are they not recalling these bikes to rectify before problems arise, presumably the dealership got the info from them from my VIN # which has confirmed these parts were used in my motor ! CRAZY !!!

Ship it and fix it if it fails - that is a manufacturers model, no matter what they produce.  So many people never put more than 2K miles on their bikes, and wouldn't pay attention enough to realize there was a change in the engines sound.  Think about it - parts already paid for, ship the bike, make the profit when it's shipped to the dealership, and see what happens - that's simple economics.

It is great that you identified the problem, and the dealership didn't write it off and backed up your findings.  We bash so many of the bad ones - but it's good to hear about a good one.

Good luck and let us know what they found.
