How many Smoke Tobacco Pipes?
« on: March 15, 2012, 12:03:17 AM »

Just curious as to how many people here smoke a Pipe on occasion...Tobacco, that is.  I have smoked pipes off and on for most of my life.  When younger, it was more conspicuous, but now that I'm older, I can get away with it.  I enjoy it, though it's not as convenient sometimes.

If so, what brand/kind/shape of pipe, and what kinds of tobacco do you smoke?

A thread on Cigars was started here once, so it's only fair.

I have a small collection of Pipes:  a Dunhill Estate pipe from 1980; 2 LaRocca Featherweights (for a quick smoke); a 70's era Ascorti (Italian); an older Stanwell (Danish); a Tommasu Spanu (Italian); a couple of Ardor pipes (Italian); and a Nording (another Danish).  One other no-name "English" pipe, but looks like a Dunhill or Peterson.

Tobacco:  W.O. Larson 1864; W.O. Larson 2010 Reserve; W.O. Larson Signature; Samuel Gawith Skiff ( a non aromatic, English Blend, but mild); two or three local "blends" which consist of ribbon cut Virginia's with a little Black Cavendish and Burley thrown in, depending on blend...they are bulk tobaccos, and everybody's got a different name for them.

Some of the pipes are worth some bucks, some not.

I have some 30 Dunhills around. Usually smoke Royal Yacht, Flake, 965 or Nighcap.

But quit taking pipes out of my house already some years ago as smoking a pipe anywhere else than in your own garden seems to be regarded as an hostile act to the environment nowadays  ;)

When I was stationed in Turkey with the Air Force in the 80's, a buddy gave me several meerschaum pipes.  He was posted to a remote radio relay site that had 25-foot  billboard antennas. Each day, local women would come up to the site in the afternoon, when the techs would shut down the link for maintenance. My buddy would hoist up the women's food, in baskets, to the walkway in front of the antennas; then he'd switch on the transmitter for a few seconds. The transmitters ran at 10kW; he used them as an impromptu microwave oven.  The women, in turn, gave him pipes that they carved in the village nearby. I only use one; the others are displays.  After a day's ride, it's relaxing to just sit back and puff away.

Of course, I never smoke when I'm riding; I'm thinking a bowl of lit tobacco would be BAD.

Now that was a nice trade.

That's the thing about a pipe...it forces you to sit down, relax, and enjoy the ritual of the whole thing.  Plus, if smoking is what you do, a pipe is probably the least harmful to your body.

Nope...smoking a pipe while riding would not be advisable...a hot ember in the wrong place would be a very bad thing, not to mention that you'd probably burn the bowl out.

I've been experimenting with some English Blends, and trying to find one that I can deal with early in the day...Dunhill Early Morning Pipe is pretty good for a first pipe of the day.  Dunhill Mellow is another good one.  Perhaps my palate is not sophisticated enough yet, but some of the English blends are just too much.

The W.O. Larsens are quickly becoming my favorite evening tobacco...the wife likes the room note.  Caramel and Vanilla, mixed with baking cookies.

I'll have to give those a try. Not sure if there are any tobacco shops in the Huntsville area, but I need to stock up.  Didn't bring a pipe when I got here, but will pack a couple when I'm home. Usually used Borkim Riff, but want to try some custom blends. In the meantime, cigars fill the bill.

This place looks like a nice store:  http://www.humidorpipeshop.com/index.html

If you try one of the W.O. Larsen blends, try either the 1864 or Signature..or both.
