Throttle sticking?
« on: March 19, 2012, 04:33:33 PM »

Anyone else have this problem?  My throttle stuck on both my 2010 and my 2011 on quick throttle snaps?  Didn't think it was that big a deal but when I had the same issue on two bikes??? If so, what's the quick fix?

Hard to say from your description (need more detail), but it wasn't uncommon on the early ETC bikes for the actual grip to bind in the switch housing due to a lack of endplay.  See if you can easily slide the grip in and out of the housing at least .030-.060".  If not, loosen the switch housing screws and see if you can create a little endplay.

If the grip itself quickly returns to the idle position but the rpms do not, that is likely to be related either to the electronics or the throttle plate actuator.

Nick,

I plan on riding it to work tomorrow morning. I really haven't had a chance to get out even though the weather has been fantastic.  I have Wednesday off so I hope to put the world behind me!

Thanks again!!

That is exactly what I had to do on my 2012 FLXSE3. When I road it home from the dealer I could just set the throttle anywhere and it would stay when I let my hand off. I tried it again at a standstill with the same result. When I got home I loosened the screws on the switch housing and the throttle would then snap back as designed. No more problems. Can't figure out why the tech wouldn't have expierence it during setup and a test ride.

Had the same problem on my 11. Dealer had to replace the heated grips and that fixed the problem.

Had the same problem on my 2011 Ultra CVO.  Took it to the dealer and a mechanic simply loosened the torx screws on the adjacent switch housing pulling same away from the throttle grip ever so slightly, tightened the screws back and tada!!!  all fixed!!

I don't know why so many people have experienced this problem.  Kinda concerning as far as QC at the York, PA factory is concerned.

People will continue to experience this until Harley makes the design more robust.  The folks on the assembly line just install the parts and screw them down, they don't have time to fiddle and tweak.  And if the parts were designed properly and made to proper tolerances, there wouldn't be any need to "tweak" anything anyway.  Most vehicular assembly operations are set up these days with parts that are designed to only fit one way and with built in locator's, or they use assembly aids to align parts correctly, and there is very little if any "adjusting" necessary on finished product.  Obviously Harley is behind the curve on this stuff.

I find it amazing that they don't take this much more seriously.  A sticking throttle would get the average auto manufacturer a big recall.  But once again, the same sort of defects that cause big auto recalls don't seem to cause a ripple in the space time continuum in the world of Harley. :confused5:

Had very same problem on my '11 RUSE - but only after several thousand miles on it.  One day it just started to drag.  Talked to service manager and he said to loosen the switch housing and get some end play on the grip.  Problem solved and never recurred.  Makes you wonder.  :nixweiss:

I had this problem with my 09 Ultra.  The first time I took it to the dealer and they screwed up the heated grip.  The next time, I investigated a little better and found it was friction between the grip and housing.  I bought a can of Tri-Flow and sprayed it where the grip meets the housing.  Haven't had a problem since.  Now I Tri-flow it whenever I service it.

Good Point!!!!  Such a simple fix that has led to such a huge inconvenience for so many owners.  Makes you wonder about things you cant see.
