Great pics Sad.  The Mrs. is obviously a great sport.  The color imaging of the bike over the grayscale image makes for a cool photo too.  How long was the incident with the murderous deer?  Did that bike ever get resurrected or was it forever dead?

Great pics Sad.  The Mrs. is obviously a great sport.  The color imaging of the bike over the grayscale image makes for a cool photo too.  How long was the incident with the murderous deer?  Did that bike ever get resurrected or was it forever dead?

The deer incident was returning from the rally while on Interstate 90 in Minnesota in 2004.  We had spent the night in Sioux Falls and left for the next leg home early Sunday morning.  I was running eighty miles an hour on cruise control.  Fortunately, I was riding solo.  No helmet, but leathered up head to toe with quality gear.  The deer hit my front wheel from the right side.  Luck was with me.  It knocked me into the grass median of the highway.  I tumbled for 200 feet.  I had a separated shoulder, torn ligaments in the shoulder, broken wrist, thumb, two fingers, torn ligaments in my wrist, cracked sternum and bruised lungs.  (Don't ever crack your sternum, it hurts for a long time.) I never hit my head once.  I had a dew rag on that was still there!  Unbelievable luck.  The bike had broken front forks, twisted neck on the frame, every piece of sheet metal, fiberglass and plastic was broken.  Shocks bent, tranny case broken,  handle bars bent - however, the motor started!  My buddy riding behind me was just as lucky.  While I tumbled in the median, the bike tumbled on the interstate and disintigrated in front of him.  He had to dodge the shrapnel while watching me and trying to stop all at the same time.  When the dust settled and I got home I called my insurance agent at Progressive Insurance.  The fellow from Progressive came over to my house the day after I got home.  He came into my house and explained he would put my vin number in his laptop which would bring up the parts list for the bike.  Then we would go out to the bike and put an "x" in the box next to each part that showed damage.  He cautioned me that "don't get your hopes up, because we almost never total these bikes, because of their value it takes a lot to not fix them.  I said "o.k., lets go."  We went outside, I opened up the garage door.  He looked in, closed his laptop and said "we're done, I'll get you a check by the end of the week."  That Friday, about 8:00, my doorbell rang and it was him.  I had paid $30,500 for the bike.  He had a check for $31,000 for the bike.  I tried to buy the remains from the insurance company, but they wanted $10,000.  I could not see that much value remaining in it, so I chose to let it go.  That was the end of 04SEEG #1.  I had 04 SEEG #2 delivered to my house two weeks later.  I was lucky and found a new one at a dealership in Moore, Oklahoma who sold it to me for $30,500 plus $500 for shipping to my home.  Of course, I couldn't ride until the following spring.  I just sold SEEG #2 last week, in preparation for my new 07 red/black SE UC which is due in November.

Those incidents are never good Sad.  But glad to read that overall it seems about as good as it could have been short of not having Bambi do a kamikazi to begin with.  The insurance guy was great, the company performed flawlessly and you had the replacement in hand before the hand was ready to ride it.  Good luck on enjoying the hell out of Ultra #1 and may its natural deer repellant always be working.
