Dirt Road
« on: March 21, 2012, 09:26:46 PM »

I am always washing my bike. I live on a dirt road and every time I get home from a ride my bike is covered in dust. I guess thats the price I pay for living in the country. Anybody else have this problem ??

I have the same problem. I live way out in the country. I have a dirt road I have to go down to get home. I hate it. I have to drive real slow when I leave and then it is filthy still. I feel your pain brother.

I love living in the country; bonfires, shooting guns, no neighbors, etc.  but the dust on my sled really sucks..
I guess thats the price I pay for the privacy. I can live with it.

Have about a quarter mile of gravel (not dirt) to contend with...just have to come & go slow.  But, living in the country is the best for me....I don't like having neighbors so close that they can see you in your own bathroom if you don't have the blinds drawn.

After reading the post though.....it brought back a bad memory.  About 1979-80 when I was working construction...was working on the Hallam powerhouse and I had a 1977 (Confederate Edition) Sportster at the time.  Weather report was for good weather....then at day's end here came a bad thunderstorm/heavy rain.   It turned the only road in/out of there into a thick soup.  So, at quitting time, I waited until all traffic left ahead of me before starting out.  It was a mile and a half of nightmare riding at about 3-5mph...the wheels & fenders got balled up with mud & sand...it must have been about six inches deep.  Almost dumped it numerous times and rode it out with both my legs spread to keep from going over.  Man, I had mud everywhere when I finally hit pavement.   Found a stick in the ditch then to clean out what I could and rode home.  I got some stares when I rode into town as both the bike & I looked like some sort of co-joined swamp monster....immediately headed straight to the nearest car wash.   ...wow...   I've been traumatized ever since.... :P

Yep, live 1/4 mile from the paved road, I just ride real slow down the gravel road.  It doesn't matter how fast or slow you go, the dust still gets everywhere and can never really keep the bike spotless.

What really ticks me off is the jerks that fly down the road and create a huge dust cloud that just hangs around, but I wouldn't change where I live.  Love the peace and quiet too much to move away.

We live in the country too, about 70 miles west of DC near the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah Valley.  I only have about 150 yards of gravel driveway, but dust still is a pain in the tookus....but all we have to do is decide "left or right" and we're on a great riding road.   :mango:
