Hydraulic Clutch
« on: March 22, 2012, 09:10:25 AM »

I know this sounds stupid but I have been riding motorcycles for 44 years, Harleys for 34 of those years. I learned to Drive at 10 years old in a 43 Ford Pick-up that had to be "Double Clutched" to shift gears so I definitely know how to drive a clutch but this is my first Hydraulic clutch and I just don't feel comfortable with it. I have tried many things to re-learn this clutch thing such as applying more throttle as I let it out and anything else I can think of but often I hear the compensator sprocket knock as I take off. Sometimes everything is normal but I would say this happens at least 40% of the time and it is embarrassing. I would hate to have someone toy with me at a light and implicate a desire to race as of course I would be up to the challenge but seem like a rookie on this clutch deal. What am I doing wrong??? Any suggestions???

Embarrassingly waiting for a helpful reply.

I've had four CVOs with the hydraulic clutch starting with the first SE Ultra in '06 and now my '12 SE Ultra.  No problems with any of them.  Wondering if you may be attributing some other problem to the fact that the clutch is hydraulically actuated.  Perhaps the clutch itself or the primary chain or the compensator are at fault.  I would have someone check it out.   :2vrolijk_21:  This does not seem normal to me.  I really like the hydraulic clutch - no adjustment required.

The compensator in a 2009 CVO was still the ultra cheap and underengineered original design from the 2007 TC96 models, and it would bottom pretty much any time, even while starting the bike.  So I can fully understand it bottoming out when you engage the clutch from a standing start.  Perhaps that is what you're actually experiencing.  If that's the case, an upgrade to the latest level SE compensator may be all you need.  They became standard on the CVO's in the 2010 model year.
