Bluetooth interface for intercom and audio system????
« on: March 23, 2012, 04:15:02 PM »

As you all know by now the coiled cord that runs from your helmet to the input plugs on the Ultra is a pain in the ass to deal with.  So, does anyone know whether or not there is a bluetooth plug (Interface) that plugs into the inputs that will take the place of the coiled cords, thus transmitting between a helmet installed head set and the bluetooth device????  It seems like HD works like Apple!  Each year they come out with a new/old idea to keep you interested and wanting to upgrade.  With that in mind, i'm quite sure that the moco will come out with this convenient idea in the future.

Been searching for the same thing. Most items I have found have too vague a description to know whether it will work.

You would need to buy a helmet Bluetooth device and a Dongle, which would be expensive. The problem with using a Bluetooth Helmet is the battery life. If you are just using the device in standby mode then the battery will last you all day (12 or more hours). However when you start streaming audio (listening to the radio, CD, etc) then the battery will go dead in about 3 - 4 hours.

This is what most people have reported, everyone I know who has tried it have gone back to a corded hearset.

Just a word to the wise before you start spending big bucks trying.

If my plans were for needing 3 or more hours then the cord is fine.

If I was able to BT the music to the "I already have" Bluetooth helmet (Cardo, Nolan, ???) that would be great. Don't need 3+ hours for more then half of my riding.

I know most of your concerns with building the dongle has been battery life, but almost every time you brought that up it was with many hours of use.

If I got 3-4 hours of use out of a charged battery that would be fine for most of my riding. How many people really ride more then 4 hours a day (excluding trips)

Actually, since I can control my iPod through the radio with the handle bar controls, I wouldn't mind having to plug the charger in to the helmet on all day rides, just to be have the ability of using the hand controls.

My phone will BT music to the helmet just fine, but you can't operate an iP**** with gloves.

J&M has the setup you are looking for to eliminate your cord and yes you have to have the bluetooth on the helmet. If I remember right the whole setup was around 500.00 The dongle if you have them went inside your lower fairings. It was suppose to let you operate everything that the radio was capable of. Check it out

Are you guessing with that or you have actually seen the link?
There is nothing like that on the web site.

I was looking at the J&M booth at Daytona and mentioned a Bluetooth deal for Harley and the salesman told me that had it all available and started to describe it, but it is a multi-piece deal, not a kit, buy this, buy that etc. I thanked him and moved on. Assuming he knew what he was talking about it is available.

AKE, a small German manufacturer offers the same but not dedicated to a special headset as J&M, their system is compatible with all bluetooth standard devices.

Personally I don't need everything over the headset, I'm happy with GPS/intercom/phone only - but we don't use CB over here.

I'm amazed at that, Hans.  I couldn't be without it!   Why don't you use it?

Hi Jim,

because you won't find anybody to speak to  ;)

CB isn't popular over here anymore and on our mountain backroads there are no truckers - who still use CB quite frequently - within reach so you are left to the one or other Ultra or Gold Wing either riding with you or passing by actually.  As almost nobody uses the CB even on the E-Glides we got used to either use headset to headset communication or just call by telephone.

Too much talking only distracts from riding anyway  ;D

Hmmmm.... I wasn't thinking of anyone external to your group of 2 or more bikes, Hans - just between you and your accompanying friends. (No longer popular here, either!) Useful for communication on a rideout, as well as a quick "Hey, look at that over there" or "Watch the gravel on this corner" when even just a couple of bikes are touring.  Can't do that with a phone!

This is the equipment you need from J&M if you want to give it a try. I have heard that this system has issues. It will run you about $1200.00 and I am not recommending it I am just giving you the part numbers.

1 or 2 - HS-EBLU629EDR-UN   Helmet Headset
1 - JBLU-BHDG05   Dongle
1 - JBLU-BHDG05-CA05   Wiring Harness

@Jim:

as GPS and headsets get more and more popular with the non-Ultra community Interphone Tribe may be an interesting item for your and my purposes.

Interesting device, Hans!  And PMR is a lot more sensible than CB....
